Using veg oil as engine oil

Hi-

I've been doing some research on using FRESH veggie oil as crankcase oil.

Check out:
http://www.hort.purdue.edu/newcrop/ncnu02/v5-029.html

http://www.hort.purdue.edu/newcrop/proceedings1999/v4-247.html

It sounds promising! I was able to find small quantities of high-oleic safflower oil, and high-temp canola oil at the local health food store. Costco has 1-gallon containers of canola as well.

Has anyone been trying this? Any idea what veggie-based additives they are talking about?

My MBZ leaks enough oil to make me concerned about the environmental impact of it.

I did some research on people trying this, and some folks reported getting a weird jellied mixture, but it looks like this was a result of not getting enough of old dirty petroleum oil out.

All I know is that WVO loses viscosity FAST with temperature, holding up nothing like engine oil... and it starts to polymerize around 300*F. No where near comfort level for inside my engine I would think...

from what I can tell those sites mention

veg oil BASED lubrication oils, not pouring in veg oil to your crankcase. I doubt the CF or CH rating is very high on canola!
I would stick to synthetics or dino motor oils

Does anyone know what is used to make fully synthetic oil, I don't? With regard to the environmental impact of motor oil, I would be more concerned about the contaminates in the oil (heavy metals, etc.) than the oil itself. Probably the best thing to do is fix the leaks and make sure the used oil is disposed of properly. I don't think I'm interested in putting anything other than commercially available motor oil in my crankcase.

I can't imagine how much veggie oil would shorten the life of your turbo. Turbo's are tough on ordinary oil. Veggie oil wouldn't stand a chance.

20+ years ago, I used to have sponsorship from Duckhams oil, and used it in my Formula Atlantic car and other SCCA production racers. This green glop was based on castor bean oil. Again, notice the emphasis on “based”.

Do you remember the commercial a few years ago for some snake oil, where they demonstrated an engine that was running after the crankcase was drained? Sure it ran, but for how long and with what amount of damage?

You can piss into the sump and run your engine on that, but again – for how long?

Nahh I'd prefer not to find out if she blows or not with my $6k 603. Maybe you guys with your "cheap" $4k 617's should give it a go.

Back in the 60's I worked for a company that dealt in vegetable and animal oils and greases. From these awful smelling feed stocks thay made vegetable and animal based fatty acids that were often clear or water white and nearly non odorous. The next step was to esterify (react) the fatty acids with various alcohols. This process could yield many different esters, some of which found use as vinyl plasticizers and others as synthetic lubricants. So yes I would say that the current synthetic lubricants could be veggie based, but they are certainly not just the raw veg oil!!!

Be verrrry careful. This would border on "penny wise and pound foolish".

Worth conducting an experiment......if you've got a spare engine or two laying around.

I'm staying with my Delo 400.

You would have to be a complete imbicile to even think about putting veggie oil in your crankcase.

1. Line up a few engine rebuilders before you try it.

2. If you are really concerned about the environmental impact, try something less radical like say fixing it?
