Systhetic oil for older diesels, or not ?

I heard from several people , that synthetic motor oils are not very good for older like 87ish MB diesels. Obviously people like Amsoil, see no reason for not to use it.
Any experience ? All comments appreciated. Thanks.

That statement you have heard is NOT true. The engine does not know what kind of oil that it has had, nor does it care. You on the other hand do care and would be well advised to use the Amsoil synthetic.

Engines will take what ever you pour down the valve cover and I never saw one throw it back up.

I agree with Diesel Giant. I use full synthetic in my 69 220D. It slows down engine wear which is important in an engine 37 years old.

I use Mobil 1 synthetic in my 82 and 83. The decision just comes down to cost.

The previous owner of my 300SD used Mobil's Delvac 15w40 and said that the owner before him also used Delvac....

Does Delvac do more to protect a diesel engine than, say, Mobil 1 synthetic, or vice versa?

OK....Here is my question. I have a 1985 300D. Per the oils listed in the owers manual I am having a hard time finding full synthetic oil of the weights listed. What full synthenic brand and weight do you use for a 617 engine? I use Mobile 1 0W40 and 5W40 for my 1999 E300. Would that be OK to use?
P.S. I live in Ohio near the Michigan border so I drive I a year round broad temperature range.

shell

shell rotella which is the tractor trailor diesel motor oil that
is really good... it now comes in synthetic and it cost about 10 bucks
less than mobil one at walmart.... so an oil change with mobil one
from walmart is 50 buck... its 32 bucks with shell rotella synthetic...

I use Castrol Diesel and I like changing it every 3,000 miles.

Like Larry B. says; "Change it HOT & often."

Personally, I'm not comfortable using 0W40 in a 617. I believe the 0Wxx oils were developed for newer engines (some here will disagree). I like Mobile 1 5W40 for the 617, it seems to work well over a wide range of temperatures, including cold starting. It also seems to have more extensive diesel ratings (CI-4, CH-4, CG-4, CF-4 and CF) than the 0W40 (just CF). There are only two problems at the moment, price and availability. The 5W40 is in the process of being repackaged as "Turbo Diesel Truck" and hasn't been seen much for the last couple of months. Rumor has it that it will be available again soon. It also sells for about $5.50 to $5.99 in quarts or $20 and change in 5 quart jugs (if you can find it). The heavy truck version is Mobil Delvac 1 5W40, which costs about $28 for 4 quarts at your friendly truck stop. It is not clear (to me at least) if Mobil 1 5W40 is exactly the same stuff as Delvac 1 5W40, or not. Clear as mud?

Of course, you can use any diesel rated oil in the proper weight, conventional or synthetic. Any good 5W40, 10W40, or 15W40 should be OK. However, my experience is that conventional 15W40 gets pretty thick and cranks slowly on cold mornings.

Take a look at my previous post, this is a little confused. Mobil Delvac 15W40 is a conventional diesel oil. Mobil Delvac 1 5W40 is synthetic diesel oil that is similar to Mobil 1 5W40 (note the "1" means synthetic for Mobil products). There is a significant price difference between them, and most people are willing to put more miles on the synthetic. If you search this forum, you will find just about every opinion you can imagine. However, the majority opinion seems to be that you can use conventional oil with relatively frequent changes (say 3000 to 5000), or use synthetic with less frequent changes (say 5000 to 10000). Most important, make sure whatever you use has a diesel rating.
