New seat covers

has anybody bought new seat covers for their cars? I need two new front seat cushion covers, just the bottoms, not the backs.

Where? How much? How was the quality?

Thanks.

I did the front seat cushions and the rear complete over the last few years. The price of the covers has gone WAY up at GAHH http://www.gahh.com/300tdte-wagon-1983-seatcoverkits-27_51_3440_239_2122.html since I did mine. The other outfit that I used merged with World Upholstery http://www.worlduph.com/ (used to be expensive; may be more competitive now that Gahh raised it's prices).

Here's who I used recently http://www.galaxymall.com/auto/mercedes/240D.html. Great quality, nice people, good advice/help. Prices better than others. YMMV.

I bought some W123 covers from here:

http://www.4basic.com/mbkits.html

Wasn't too happy. Stitching was very weak and had to return them for fixing after we ripped them trying to install on the backs. Vinyl looks OK, but probably will not wear well. Avoid them, IMHO.

After going through this, unless you are VERY picky, I would be on the lookout for 2 good passenger seats out of a boneyard. You will not do better than MB for quality. And its not a fun job, although the bottom isn't too bad and you can beef up the springs. I do not think you can buy just the bottoms- and they won't match if you could get them.

You should post the color of the seats.and the year of your car etc. A few guys may have a couple of good bottoms around. You are not going to like the replacemnt cost for reproductions.. Almost cheaper to go and buy a complete car with good upolstery and transfer it over . Again just an opinion, I would like to locate a really good black passenger seat bottom cover for example. For a 1982 240 d. Unfortunatly the present cover is very good but almost looks like someone spilt a chemical on it in one area and the vinyl crinkled. Might also have been some type of reaction in the original material as well perhaps. I probably know where there is possibly some blue stuff but not the years of the salvage cars they are in. This far north the sun takes a far lesser toll.

well, I checked those sites, called around, and did some pricing. Wound up ordering from Bill Hirsch Auto in New Jersy.

Thanks for the replies, they did help a lot!

There is another place that can get that stuff, but I'm not allowed to mention it. Key is to always shop around.

Mismost-

What did you pay for them? Please be very careful when you stretch the backs over the top of the backrest or you will be buying new ones. Be sure to let us know how they turned out. I need some of these for my 77 240D, but at this point I am holding out for junkyard material.

rs889...I got the MBtex, just the bottom cushion covers, $130.00 each. My backs are fine, the color will not match after 23 years anyway, so I saved a few bucks going with the MBTex vs. leather. I know that is a mortal MB sin, mixing vinyl and leather....but I am a mortal tightwad and plan to cover the hot ass leather/vinyl mix with sheepskins...so the savings over leather will pay for the sheepskins...it may be madness, but there is a plan.

I am tired of checking the junk yards, I have several that call me with "great interiors" when they come in...so far they have all been junk!

Will post with my results in a few weeks.

That price seems about right. I think I paid about $600 for everything, with headrest and driver's armrest. But, that was for crap. I will be interested in what you get. Particularly if the seams are "welded" like MB did it or just stitched

Does anyone have a recommendation for some cheap plain jane slip on seat covers that fit good? I need quite a bit more restoration before I worry about brand new upholstery.

Wow doc, that is a great deal. Too bad it is such a gawd awful color. No wonder nobody wanted it. Unfortunately, that's what I have in my car. What's worse is that it is in perfect condition.

Rick

PS Seriously, though, did world upholstery "weld" the seams like MB did, or just stitch them?

My cushion covers came in today, that's the good news. Bad news is unless something changes in my schedule, I can't put 'em on untill Saturday....sometimes I hate workin' for a livin'!

They look great, very good workmanship, I'm pleased. The color is so fresh compared to the backs which have darkened and palamino pinkened with age...still I think they will "pop" the interior. The padding for the center pleated section is sewn in, as is the foam side bolsters, and the cloth lining...looks like what I took off.

Somebody asked if the seams are sewn and "welded"....not welded as far as I can tell from a quick look.

forget..they are still in the box I got them in...my originals are still nice but not perfect. But when I saw I could grab them for $50 I did...even if I really didn't have a pressing need for them.
