local mb dealer. i made an ass of myself. changed glow plugs on 'blue'. an 83 240d with you-shift-tranny. anywho, as anyone who has changed out glow plugs knows, on this or perhaps any 123, the access is limited. wish for smaller hands and a bigger.... whatever. one of the fuel return lines needed attention. the quote. $16 and change for a meter. my recollection, erroneous, $3 or $4 the meter. *****ed. nothing serious. after apology on my part - $13 a meter. my goodness. fiber/rubber hose. a meter. $13. yes, i know. the going rate. seems obscene. and now another round! enjoy.

I paid something like $3 a foot for Viton hose. McMaster Carr. Figuring it will last me at least 5 years its cheaper than the MB stuff with the cloth covering that starts weeping after 18 months.
Many people don't know that they can get a discount for parts from the dealer just by telling them your a DIY'er mechanic. I used to get 15% off list now they are down to 10%. 10% off a 200% markup is 190% of what it should cost

I believe from what you say that you've never had to change Glow Plugs on a 6-cylinder engine. If you had, you would find the 240D a cakewalk by comparison!

I want to make a creeper with an adjustable height for jobs like that. Or just find an old table with casters. That IS back-killing work.

If you don't have a universal deep 12mm socket you are punishing yourself, also. Then there is the nut that goes over the center conductor, I wish I had a nickel for everyone that I've dropped. They solved that on the 6 cyl diesels, the nut is held by a cage formed onto the lug, its all one unit not a separate nut and lug. Nice, huh?

was it the 'new' type line ie. grey with orange stripe? if so you will be happy with it.. even at more money it is worth it.

That is a deal for Viton. 30 years ago I worked part time at a company where a roll of belting made of Viton smaller than a round coffee table cost the company wholesale more than my parents house was worth at the time. But there was no rubber better in heat then, and darned little now.

McMaster definitely has the best price. The $3 a foot is for the injector return line. The 5/16" thick wall is a leeeeettle bit more $$$$$. About $12 a foot, but only 2 are needed.

On my 5 cylinder I found that a 12 mm ratcheting wrench worked nicely on the GP's. I didn't remove the fuel lines so my girlfriend's small hands were helpful in some spots.

It was kind of a pain, but I have changed the sparkplugs on an 8 cylinder Mustang before, so I wasn't complaining. My hands were like raw meat after that job.

I didn't find glow plugs that bad on my 83 240. between a 12mm deep socket and a 12mm offset wrench i didnt really have any trouble.

Removing the injection lines makes changing gp's really easy. Now if you want hard to change gp's try a Powerstroke in a Ford!

the injector lines cover everything, and IMPOSSIBLE to get to anything without removal... have fun.
that V8spider set sucked "bolt buster" motor not very reliable.
5cyl much better.
