1976 300D brake light problem intermittant and now nothing

Does anyone have any experience with brake light troubles? Mine were working fine, then the inspector said they were not working. I went home and the lights were working fine. The next day I replaced the alternator belt, and now the power brakes are intermittant and no brake lights at all. So far I have checked the vacuum pump, fuse , & switch at the pedal, and power coming to the pedal switch, pedal switch seems to be working. All that checks good. The bulbs check good and when swapped still check good.. So I am losing power somewhere between the pedal switch and the tail lamp assy. Am I missing a common fault area? Does any one have any similar experience.
thanks
