Indeed i may need a trailer to haul all of this!
Im going from Columbus on I-90 to Cape Cod, down to the Hamptons and down to NYC then Middle New Jersey and back the same route.
I do keep windex and clean rags with me. Im going to the shop to day and look for hoses, fuel fliters, etc. Thanks all!

Might also be good to keep a piece of the fuel line hose with you in case you get a leak on the interstate. I mean the lines that attach to your injectors. It is an odd size and best to get it from a dealer. Also get the terminating piece that is on the exit from the last injector as it has a habit of occasionally leaking.

USA

I just got my 400E (got it on the e-bay) and drove it home 1158 miles. Made it in 16 hours. All I had it was cell phone and some money. Keep in mind this is USA, I am from Europe and it is scary when you have to go another country do get any parts for your car. Over here all you have to do is to make phone call. You have to appreciate that. Good luck

I usually just keep a small set of combination wrenches, a crescent wrench, pair of pliers, and a few screwdrivers in the trunk. I have also been around long enough to keep a roll of toilet paper along on any long trip I take. you can use it for wiping the various dipsticks under the hood, among a couple of it's various uses.

This Won't Take Up Much Room...

Write down this number and keep it in your car at all times. It's the number for nationwide Mercedes-Benz Roadside Assistance.

1-800-367-6372

MBUSA Roadside Assistance Program is free. Check out their website:

http://www.mbusa.com/brand/container.jsp?/owners/clientcare/roadsideassistance/index.jsp&menu=0_3#

Does not matter how old it is, how many miles are on it, or how many former owners your car has had. They will help at no charge with jumpstarts, tire changes, and "a few gallons of fuel".

Thanks to David "be459" for posting it in the first place.

THANKS longston,
Ive wrote the number down! Ive got all the fan belts, but the place i bought them from gave me two of the alt belts. I guess there were two sizes for the 83 300 Turbo, they are 1/2 inch difference. Does anyone know which size it would be, the larger or smaller one? Thanks!

vaccuum hose

Might be a good idea to take along some vacuum hose too. You don't want that the central locking system gives out while you're INSIDE and then you get locked inside the car.

How about a roll of duct tape - It helped on the Apollo 13 flight.

Sounds like your well prepared for your trip - I would suggest that you take a look under the hood (during your rest stops) and look for anything abnormal (fluid leaks, fluid levels, abnormal noises).

I agree with you on the cell phone issue - however you might check with a family member to see if you can borrow one.

P.S. Don't forget to bring "tunes" (Cassette, CD) for you trip.

A good set of maps for the whole USA, or at least the region you're travelling in, would help, if you get in the mood to "explore". Have a good trip,

Thanks all. I have the duct tape and vacuum hose from the previous owner of the car in the trunk. I just pulled the car out of the garage and washed and detailed it. I checked the tires pressures and fluids. OH- and i made sure the CD player worked good also!
Very exciting for me taking this fine (old) car on this trip. This is my sisters and mine's spring break. We are hanging around cape cod and New York City. Can't wait to race those taxi-cabs down Broadway!

I just got back from a 4747 mile trip that included getting an '87 300SDL in Dallas TX that I bought on Ebay. We started in PA with stops in FL GA LA TX TN and VA and back to PA. This was done over a period of 8 weeks. Total repairs: replaced one flat tire in FL. Total maintenance: one oil change and filter in TX because it was due (10,000 miles). I have been using Castrol Syntec 5W50 and a PTFE additive and seems to get more miles per liter the more I drive it. It used to use 3 liters in 10,000 miles but last time used only 2 liters. There was no discernable change on dip stick in 1500 mile trip back from TX.

Not bad for a car I bought cheap and for parts. It doesn't look too good any more, but it sure runs good. Eventually it will die from rust because I use it in the winter in PA although I try to use it only when the roads are dry. The 300SDL ran perfect and it is a looker too: not a scratch, dent or a rust spot on it. The dealer I bought it from had it all shined up and it looked like it just came off the assembly line.

The only extra parts I carried were fuel filters, 2 gallons of 50/50 antifreeze mix and the oil and filter for the oil change. I don't believe in changing fuel filters until they plug up. The 2 in the 300SD are in there for 40,000+ miles and there is no indication that they are not passing enough fuel. For a Diesel its easy to tell when fuel filters are getting clogged (loss of power) and it is then that it is time for a change. My theories of maintenance may differ from some of you but they have been working for me for over 30 years and 500,000 miles in MB diesels.

Sounds like you'll be ready for a fun and relaxing trip! ALthough I'd strongly recommend the cell phone and AAA card and of course cash and credit cards, perhaps even Travellers Cheques. Always a good measure. By the way, don't forget a loaded camera and film! You'll want to capture yourself and the 300D at interesting points along your trip! I always do!

Just in case you didn't know, I think all cell phones can call 911 without any contract. Years ago, I bought some in a flea merket and gave them to the kids to keep in their cars for emergency purposes only.
My 2 cents plus change.

It sounds like we have a good start for the next National Lampoon Vacation movie. We can add six more headlights and some wood trim and call it the Mercedes Family Truckster. The wood trim will go well with the luggage roof rack for hauling all this stuff.

Don't forget to unhook the dog leash from the rear bumper and put her in the car.

Gute Reise,
