According to Haynes:

Auto transmission - Dexron II ATF (Dexron III or IV is equivalent)4.81 liters w/ fluid change including torque convertor

Rear Differential - SAE 90W Hypoid Gear Oil (Be sure and remove the "fill" plug first.) 1 liter

BTW, welcome to the forum and you will find, as I have, lots of helpful folks here.
Also, there is a search function on the "blue" bar for speedier answers.

Haynes is the name of a service manual available for these cars(and others), its pretty in depth and will answer most general repair/maintenance questions.
A good place to find one is probably on ebay or something.

A lot of us just know this stuff from being so obessed with these cars....

The search function is pretty useful when used correctly, remeber to keep search queries short like "transmission fluid" or "240d transmission" etc, and also select which area you want to search in, since you have a 240d, point your searches at the diesel discussion. (to do searches this way, click search on the menu, then choose "advanced" and it will go to a better search page with more options.

There is nothing someone here can't answer, so you've found the right place! Welcome to the forum!

Haynes Automotive Repair Manuals available at many parts store, on-line, book stores. etc. Similar to Chilton's, if you are familiar with them.(I wouldn't bother with Chiltons) Look for "Mercedes Benz Diesel 123 Series".

For the search, try a little broader topic such as "tranny fluid type" then narrow it down. Also, using "W123" versus "240D" might help. Don't forget to check at the bottom in "related searches" for answers.

Hope that helps!
