Pick 'n Pull Spare Parts

A nice looking southern (no rust) '83 300SD arrived at the local pick 'n pull. I have a 123. Mileage is 141k if the odometer can be believed (general condition of the car might support this, but I'm used to looking at rust heaps).

Would you consider pulling parts for "spares" just to place on the shelf in the event you might need a replacement? If so, what would you pull?

I'm thinking:

Injection pump charge is $50 including core.
Oil cooler $25
Turbo?
Head?
Injectors?
Glow relay?
Alternator?
A/C compressor?

Any advice on this for a newbie?

the oil cooler is going to be trash even if you get it off a parts car. the threads will be stripped because of removing the connectors, they dont like each other. the metals react.. unless you can do it very very very carefully you can get it in decent condition.

but i believe the oil cooler is different for the 123 so that might set there for a while til you buy a 126.

actually, for myself, i doubt that i would pull anything that i didnt actually need. the exception might be the alternator. it is a good chance that you wont need any of the other parts. they seldom go bad.

the ac comp will go bad, but i would buy new if it went bad 'cause it is so much of a pain to r and r and the freon is expensive that i wouldnt put a used one on unless i knew for sure that it was practically brand new.

Probably 126 parts are in good demand on eBay, or you could offer them to members here in classifieds. I know I'd love to find a nice 126 at a junk yard so I could pull things like a rear glass, headlights, some mouldings, and a few other things - but I don't really know of good junk yards that have 126's in New Jersey...

Thumbs up

If the price is right I'd pick up a few things. GP relay, injectors, maybe the turbo.

Other stuff is so common or rarely goes bad there really isn't a need for it.
