Transmission Differences - Sedans and Wagons

Can anybody state in simple terms the differences in the transmissions found in the 82-84 300DT sedans and the 82-84 300TDT wagons?

The impression I get from searching the forum is that they
are not interchangeable, but are the differences internal, external, both?

I may need one of each.....

Thanks,
Bob

I believe they are the same. Non Turbo models are different than the turbo models, and in 85 they had a bit different trannys, but AFAIK wagons and coupes and sedans are the same.

Between the 123 turbo wagons and 123 turbo sedans they are the same, as they use a mechanical speedo. The 126 turbo's use an electronic speedo, so the tailhousing is different as it has a pickup instead of a gear drive.

The Natuarally Aspirated trannys are different from all the turbo ones.

I once owned a 81 300TD Wagen & it had a Electronic speedo (yes a 123 ). The Tranny had a 126 part number.

From what I've seen, those 81 300TD wagons have always been the exception to the speedometer cable rule with W123s. Anyone know why they did without the speedometer cable for that one model year?

Yes, our wagon has the electric speedo. 81 300TDT. Not sure if the transmitter would be compatible with a standard (mechanical) speedo though.
