My MB Quart 5-1/4" speakers for the rear deck just arrived. They look good, feel heavy (big magnet, one hopes). I may have time to get them in today, will report perceived results (can't be worse than factory speakers).

The MB Pint 4" front speakers are back-ordered.

Measure twice, cut once!

I'm down to actually installing the rear speakers and can't decide what to do. The factory speakers use three screws, the MB Quarts four. The Quarts fit in the factory holes -- no cutting -- but the screw holes don't match.

My choices are (a) use the mounts and covers that came with the MB Quarts, adding clips to the fiberboard to fit the Quarts (least modification), or (b) use the stock covers, modifying the speakers to use the factory's three-screw mount (more stock appearance).

I'd prefer to use the factory cover for a more stock appearance but hate to modify the expensive new speakers. I'm leaning towards using the Quart mounts and covers, because it will leave the factory covers -- and the Quarts -- intact, in case I ever want to reverse the operation. Plus, I can paint the Quart covers, since I have leftover paint from doing the 1st aid box.

Opinions?

Thinking out loud....

I'm back to favoring the factory appearance (whadya mean, "make up yer mind, fer Pete's sake?"). Here's what I did...

I made a template from a piece of paper to show where the mounting holes for the factory covers would have to go on the new MB Quart 5-1/4 inch speakers. The template allowed me to put a dab of white housepaint (it was handy) on the spots where holes would have to be drilled in the speaker frames. As you can see from the pictures, the holes won't affect operation of the speakers. I will be able to use the factory mounting points and the factory covers and I won't have to paint anything.

Got it!

I drilled a set of three 1/8 inch holes in the frame of the speaker and notched the sides with my Dremel tool to clear the posts on the stock cover. Now the speaker fits perfectly in the stock hole with the stock cover.

thats MY kind of audio install

Modify the equipment, not the car.

I think that's the best way to do it

Nate has good taste, it's clear.

The job is done. Speakers are in, work great. Because the plastic frames of the MB Quarts are a little thicker than the stamped metal frames of the factory speakers, the covers sit a little high. With the factory speakers, the screws pull them down into the carpeting that covers the rear deck. With the Quarts, the covers barely touch the carpeting. It's barely noticeable and only if you know exactly what you're looking for.

Now waiting for the front speakers to get off of back order and into my hands.
