Injection pump blues

Hi.
Anyone have any experience with the injecion pump? Mine (87 300d) sprung a leak and left beautiful oil patterns on my pavers.
I hit 4 salvage yards in my area today and nobody has any, and they dont know where to find one.
Can mine be rebuilt? The dealer wants like $1600.00 for the part, seems a little steep, figured I'd ask some of you's for advice. (Yes, yous is a word in NJ.)
Thanks!
PK

Define "sprung a leak"

Someone here may have come across the same problem and worked out a solution for repair.

are you sure ??

are you sure it is not juset the flex tubing or the return lines leaking?/
if the leak is right on top of the injectors then i would suspect the o-ring seals and copper o-rings are shot and need to be replaced..
i remember a link here as to the torque settings and repair-replacement instructions..
i did not do mine but bought my mechanic the spline socket and he did it..

not too expensive but it has toi be done in the cleanest of engine compartments ...

i own 4 diesels my 90 and my 92 have hadt the seals replaced and return lines that resulted in no more leaks..

my 94 s-350 i just had return lines done...

my 98 300 td shows no signs as of yet.

hope this helps...

you can search my nick and find my probs...

i did however shortly after doing my 92's o-rings and gaskets have to have a timing chain and rails and tensioner replaced about 2 weeks later... chain strecthed so bad the engine wouldnt idle and performance was bad..
best 800 bux i spent .. dual sprocketed stainless steel chain, and Ip pump timing and the car was like new.. 118 k i think the chain was replaced..
she now has 230 k and I just ran my first can o lubro molly diesel Purge thru the system staraight into the injectorers and cigar recirc hose and man shes just like new again..

hope this helps...

if the pump truely has a big leak, look inhte phone book for the local "Diesel Injection Service" They usually do rebuilds for a bit less than dealer.

Unsure if it interchanges, but I've got an IP from an 86 190D2.5 5 cylinder taking up space. Has 160000 miles on it, didn't leak and had regular fuel filter changes. Make a reasonable offer and its yours.

Won't interchange unless you can weld another cylinder onto it. He needs one with six.

But think about the increase in fuel economy!

I found a truck repair center and they sent me to a diesel injection
pump rebuilder, not hard to find at all - just not the kind of thing
in your local yellow pages.

For around $500USD and some change I got a completely rebuilt and
calibrated IP.

Diesel Truck big rig repair shop.

Thats the way I think I'd like to go.

Now to figure out how to take it off...
Bad timing as usual, I just ripped out my master bathroom and I'm in the middle of remodling it.
Everything at once.

Its hard to describe, really, because I can not actually see it leaking. There is "wet diesel" all around the pump, but while the car is running or off I cannot see a leak. I can only assume that it leaks under a load? I dunno.

Naturally I checked all of the lines and they are all good. I actually replaced a few of them about a year or so ago.

Is the diesel coming out the top of the IP where the lines attach? If so, your delivery valve seals need replaced. Few dollars and maybe 2 hours of your time if you are slow and deliberate, oh and the special splined socket, and your leak will be resolved.

Just to the right of where the lines attach there is what looks like a control module or sensor sticking straight up with a wire coming out of it. Its hard to tell, but the oil appears to be coming from that sensr.

Anybody have a diagram of that IP that they can post?

No one buys new IP's from the dealer. Just order a rebuilt one and swap them out, rebuild IP's are like $600ish. I'm sure Phil could have one on your doorstep in 48 hours or less if you are really stuck.

Where is the oil leaking from? If its the bottom cover you do know that you can just remove that cover and replace that gasket. Its like a $2 gasket, pita to get at I have been told.

Their is probably an O ring around that sensor.

I just replaced the 5 o-rings in the top of my 300d pump for $15 including postage for the o-rings. The o-rings were hard to find w/o buying the entire $25 kit. I got them from Midwest Fuel Injection @ 1-708-532-1102.

When, as, and if you install them put some Vasilene around the o-ring and slide them in the top of the pump as square to the face as possible. Clean the hole first and lube it a bit. I nicked the first ring I installed and it leaked like mad.

Is it leaking fuel or engine oil?
