good thumping in trans tunnel on left turns??
I figure it is trans mount, but figured I would ask here.
as far as I know the original mounts are in there. motor and tranny. anyway, should I just replace all the mounts, or inspect them and just change what is needed? what would allow the driveshaft to hit when making left turns? any ideas for sure or a reason why no problmes on right turns? thanks guys@! |

It could be the muffler too, but its probably the engine/tranny mounts.
I am actually filthy right now, I am: changing (changed) tranny mount/fluid/pan/gasket, and tried to do the engine mounts, but that failed because the passenger side bolt from underneath that goes up into the motor support spun out. Now I get to figure out how to fix that problem. Oh, and I couldn't get the drivers side one loose (but its not spun out) even with an 1/2drive 18" breaker bar + 10" extension & 8mm hex socket + all my strength. The passenger one was previously damaged though, it looked pretty bad when I started and I figured it'd do that. Sigh. Does anyone have any tips on how to get a spun out engine mount bolt out????

I would also take a quick look at the flex disk in the driveshaft to make sure it's not coming apart.

When my car made a thunk - only on left turns....
it was a golf ball stuck under the front seat. The link to this very short story is here: http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=148401&highlight=golf+ball+seat I chased every frame-suspension-bolt-connector part I could think of. One important fact though, if you are feeling it in the steering or performance then you have a problem.

Check the steady bearing or support bearing whatever you want to call it on the drive shaft. I have seen this on other cars with 4 wheel independent suspension.

Removing the stripped bolt...
have you ripped the hex from the middle of the bolt?.best Idea is too remove the alloy mount enirely from the engine and the two hex head bolts from the crossmember.'
don't use the oxy wrench under the hood to loosen the bolts because you run the risk of setting fire to the alloy mount... Do the mounts before you do the next job which is: The thumping in the tunnel is definately the center driveshaft support housing..I have fixed two in the last week ,it's a dead easy job, remove the flex disc from each end of the drive shaft ,mark the positon of the center housing in the tunnel and remove it,once you have the drive shaft pulled out( REAR WARDS) you can see a large nut in the middle.Mark the shaft! where it is put together it MUST go back together in exactly the same place. undo the nut and pull the shaft halves apart. The housing will have disintergrated so order a new housing AND bearing. The bearing is a standard part so if youn have a bearing supplier near you take the old one in and get a new SKF or similar brand. Knoch the old bearing off carefully taking care not to damge the dust sheild washer thing.clean the shaft with emory cloth or fine sandpaper and very carefully slip the new bearing on.Use a large peice of pipe to slide onto the shaft and connect with the INNER part of the bearing and gently tap it home.refit the outer dust sheild and push your new housing into place,Push the two halves together making absolutely sure the shaft halves are in the marked positon. put the shaft back under the car taking care to get it right way around... fit the flex discs (which you should replace anyway) and then bolt the center housing in the marked place, tighten the large nut on the splined shaft last. The reason the tunnel bangs going around a corner in one direction is merely the weight of the flayling (!!) shaft getting thrown over, just as you would if you were a golf ball under a seat. |

last night I FINALLY got the car in the air, and looked everything over well...
the problem is this. the mount was in perfect condition. the driveshaft is in perfect condition. I searched and searched. for anything that was making contact... exhaust pipe. it was hitting one of the shaft cover bolts. apparently when the car goes into reverse, the engine tilts just enough to allow the exhaust to rub on that bolt head... it looks like when the transmission was out, the shop put the downpipe fitting together at an angle. I will have to separate the pipe, and re-align it so it does not hit anything. I'll probably pull the motor mounts also. the shock mounts are really ragged looking, so pulling all that and replacing it makes sense. they are not sagging, or torn, so they are not bad, just figure they are old get it all done. |
