After sandblasting and stripping my tires raw, whats best? (85 300D W123)
After sandblasting and stripping my tires ( er I mean wheel rims..)raw, whats best? Through the years, I detailed them with Metallic Spray Paint and now after use piant stripper, they really look terrible. I would like to bring my tires( er I mean wheel rims..) back to near new appearance. I'm sending them out to get glass beaded/ sandblasted.
Whats the next step to Finish them to factory like finish? Should I just leave them bare? Last edited by Carrameow; 04-30-2006 at 08:14 PM. |

Assuming you mean wheels , I had mine powdercoated, then clearcoated, and was happy with the results. They were able to match the original color. Cost was about $100 per wheel.

Powder coating is the way to go. Check with the guys at http://www.powderperfect.com/
They quoted me a price well below the $100 you see above, and that included the blasting. They have done several jobs for me and I am very pleased with their work. |

So I waited until it was time for new tires. Took mine off the car myself. Left the car on blocks. Had the tires pulled and the wheels blasted. They sure looked clean after that! Had new tires mounted and went that (bare wheel) route for a couple of years. No problems. But, then they started to look poor again. Went the same route. This time after blasting, I had them powder coated with as close to OEM silver as they could get it. Now, they’re super easy to keep clean and look great. The trick was, not to take them to some highbrow custom show car or cycle outfit for the powder coating. Way too much money. I found an outfit that does powder coating on things like fence panels, gates and outdoor furniture. Much Much Much cheaper. Sure, if you look real close at two of the four wheels they did, you can find a couple of pinhead little specks of dust in them. So what? Like I said - You’ll have to get down there and look really close. I think the total for the blasting was 40.00 and the powder coating was around 275.00. Of course you’ll be buying new valve stems. Mounting was around 6.00 per wheel. For less than 350.00 you’ll have brand new (looking) wheels. Also - When you have them balanced. Request that the weights go on the inside only. The lack of lead clamped to the wheels does a lot for their looks as well.

So are you in need of a trip to Discount Tire? Or to a powder coating shop?

Watch "A Christmas Story" and you WILL redefine tires from then on.
".....My old man's spare was only a tire in the academic sense - it was generally round, it had once been made of rubber..." |
