Golf??? I tell a buddy of mine, golf is for people who don't know how to fish!

Want to think twice about it? Try adding a used boat to the mixture!

There are nice spring days when you get the car jacked up and its like

Heaven working on your car. You feel grateful and blessed to (1) own such a machine & (2) be able to fix it. However there are also days when its cold and rainy and you have to fix it. The WORST days are when its nice and sunny and you just dont have the oommphh to fix it.....

I had a week of vacation last week, and never really left the house. Weather was great, wife was working at the church, kids were in school or at college.
I failed on my wagon AC work, but got the plugs and wires changed in my old pickup, along with a new battery. Removed and charged battery in my Camaro, but did not remove it from it's blanket covered tomb. These vehicles are my only hobby though. Haven't been messing with fans much lately.

Wife= Toyota Sienna van (best running vehicle we own)
Me= 1997 Ford F-150 (daily driver)
1985 300TD (night and weekend driver)
1979 Chevy Stepside PU (bought brand new. Have had 27 years!)
1967 Chevy Camaro (had since 1992. 59K miles!)
1977 300D (parts car. Threw a chain )
Oldest daughter= 2001 Ford Focus ZX3 (nice little car)
Son = 2001 Nissan Frontier PU, dual cab (nice driving truck)

1968 Ford 3000 diesel tractor (best diesel I own)

THat all depends on what you can afford. Minimum of 1 for every working family member...those who don't work don't need on im my opinion.

I for example have too many....4 and a Harley..plus one parts car. And only I drive.

Well lets see, I guess my family currantly has older cars:
My dad has the 1994 F150, he bought it when it was 1 year old. Doesn't really break much and is still in good shape. He probably will trade it in for a new Toyota Tacoma in another couple of years.

My mom has the Olds, thats a 1996 and a pos. We got it when it was two years old with 10k miles on it. It was decent when it was pretty new. Within a year she probably will trade it on a new Camry, the new 07's are pretty nice. I'm still working on that E320 4Matic wagon though...

My parants typicaly buy a new/er car and keep it for 10 years. Its a good system, they don't break much and you get your moneys worth out of them.

Currantly I have the oldest ones in the fleet, see my sig. The SDL is in the best shape out of all our cars, well except my dads truck its pretty nice.

The SD I'm just driving to get my money out of.

Not really into working on cars as much as some of you guys. I'd rather be messing with boats on my weekends then turning wrench's. I'll keep the SDL as a hobby car because I do enjoy messing with that. But something like a BMW lease where everything is included atracks me. You never have to so much as pop the hood when you lease a BMW! Truely a grand thing.

Answer:

What is the maximum # of used cars per family that is viable?

Not more than 250 vehicles per licensed driver in the home.

Have a great day.

My family relies entirely on four, all with miles over 150K. Its very economical, but a bit tiring. Not one is ill-maintained and everyone works like a charm. We even use these for road trips and vacations.

The only problem is, sometimes it gets a bit tiring. It gets a little demoralizing going too junkyards when others are going golfing...I mean I had tires to rotate this weekend, but all I did was nap. You can only burn the midnight oil so much and Mother Nature catches up with you...
Depends on how much you want to spend. Cars despite popular belief run on cash. With an older car your cash goes into repairs and maint where as a newer car your cash goes into insurance, depreciation and loan interest in addition to maint and repairs. With the newer car you do get a nice shiny car with a lot of fun features. It depends really on what your looking for.

At my house there is a nice combination of new vs old.

We have a 1982 300SD which used to be my daily driver and is now in "project mode" where I intend to take care of a lot of its issues (mostly cosmetic and accessory related) that I did not have time to take it off the road. http://beostar.paunix.org/newmbzpics

We also have a 1988 Volvo 240 wagon thats useful for pretty much anything. I have driven it every day and have used it to get groceries and haul Antique Furniture. http://beostar.paunix.org/240

My brother drives a 1983 300D which is his every day driver. He drives it everywhere from work to driving to get groceries. http://beostar.paunix.org/300dvslaptop/

And the newest addition is my 1999 S320 which once my 300SD has been sorted out will be reserved for long trips and nights out on the town.

We have more cars but these are the ones that we actually drive. Most of the time it works out rather well. Right now the 240 Wagon has an alternator problem and we are really in no hurry to fix it since we have 3 other cars we can drive until we take the time to put a new alternator in it. There's only two of us so it works out to one car and one spare. When you have a spare car it eases the repair problems somewhat.

I feel that people should only have one car and one truck per person, I have one car and one truck so I am set. I want to upgrade my POS super beetle into another diesel Benz, and downgrade my Tacoma into an older Toyota strait axle truck

Will engine from 240D fit 190?

maybe in the trunk or in the passenger compartment. probably not in the engine compartment because you would have better luck fitting all the snow in Alaska there. Seriously ( and sorry to be a wise a___ and grouchy) but the 240D and 190 transmission arent going to mate and the auxillairies such as radiator, throttle, ac compressor, trans cooler would be a nightnare

I enjoy having older cars. It keeps me busy and challenged. I always work out what the job would have cost at a dealer after completing a repair. Showing this figure to my wife completely eliminates potential complaints about dirt, mess, swearing, et cetera. I am past the age where I give a darn what anyone thinks.
