Heater Core Leak

I've recently had some health problems and I think that they may be related to my Shlomos leaking heater core.

How straight forward is the replacement of such a part? I assume that it will be fairly easy, but very detail oriented with all of the little bits and pieces, but are there any tips or information any of youall can pass on?

Will my cracked dash crumble to bits in the process? It seems fairly brittle.

It is concerning to think the car I adore has been slowly killing me, ya'll! I don't guess I thought of it as a 'must fix now' kind of problem, but if you do have smelly vents-- don't wait to fix it!

Over the years I have done many heater cores but never on a 123 though. If you have reasonable mechanical skills and some patients you can do it! Just think of it in stages or a series of small jobs rather than 1 large job.
Center console has to be removed. Thats no big thing
Steering wheel
stereo and climate controller
glove box
Before you know it it's out. Just remember Germans over engineer their cars so a small handfull of screws left over should be acceptable

Having removed the evaporator/heater box on both my 82 300TD and my Daughters 240D I might suggest this. Consider some radiator leak stop first. Replacing the heater box is a big job. A doable job, but a big job.

If you intend to do the job. PM me your address. I will send you a CD with all the pictures of the 240D job. ( My pictures remove the evap/heater box since I was replacing the evaporator. You will remove the dash and center consol then split the evap/heater box)

Once you remove the center consol and dash you do not have to remove the evaporator box to get to the heater core. The heater core is at the rear part of the box so it is right next to the AC control panel. You can remove the slide clips that hold the evaporator and heater sections of the box together. If you take out the evaporator you have to recover your freon in the AC system. So the heater box can be R+R without completely removing the evaporator/heater box.
