Removing the heater core from a '84 300D. Yes, its a PITA. I figure it took 5-6hrs to get to this point and I have already removed the dash before. Ugg! Working on pulling the heater core out of the HVAC box now. Enjoy! RT

Wow, that's quite a lot of work, Rob.

What was the reason to remove the heater core? No flow??

Brian,
I got bored and wanted to see what was under the dash..... Actually I had that sickly sweet smell that kept getting stronger when I turned the heat on. I just pulled the core and it is corroded and seeping ever so slightly around the base. I just ordered the new core through a buddy that owns a bodyshop, $299.00 Ouch! RT

Yep, sometimes I think I also smell that sweet smell on the SDL every so often. That is not a job that I really want to tackle.

I have to change out an evap core soon:(
While I'm in there I'll replace some vac pods and ignition lock
And I will scrutinize the heater core!

I have never done a heater core on a benz before but I have done lots on other cars. Audi, VW, GM Landrovers. I say it's not as bad as it looks usually just time consuming.

One word of advise I'd clean the evaporator core while you have it out they are usually fairly restricted in an older car which will decrease performance in both heating and cooling!

I think you should start a new thread on: “What else should I do while I’m in here?”

What causes the smell?

My college VW bug always seemed to have that "sickly sweet smell" too.

t walgamuth 05-03-2006 07:16 PM

that is the smell of antifreeze.

brian, sometimes i think you can get the smell from a small leak under the hood too. like a little burp on your expansion tank for example.

i sold my 84 sd because i kept smelling it a little and five years later the present owner has never had to change it.
