Dash light gremlin

When the lights are off and I step on the brake, the instrument panel and shifter lights come on and flicker. They go out when I release the brake. If I turn the lights on and off, they go out too. The lights at the shifter are most noticable. I don't see it during the day unless I am in a parking garage and I usually don't see it at night, because I turn the lights on as soon as I start the car.
I am guessing a bad ground, but where do I start to look? Is there a listing of common bad ground strap locations?

That's an added feature!

Seriously, I would suspect something awry with the light switch instead of grounds in this case. Lights coming "ON" by themselves have to get power from somewhere. Grounds would more likely be suspect if the lights flickered "OFF".

I'm guessing here, but is it a possible problem with the brake lights feeding power back into the parking/tail light circuit? Do the exterior parking lights also flicker? Are the brake light bulbs correct?

I was thinking along the same lines as Craig (voltage feeding back through the brakelights somehow). I have not been able to check the outside lights. I forget about the problem until I am in the parking garage again. Then, I can't step on the brake and check the outside lights at the same time.
The thing that makes me think think that it may be a switch problem is that the problem stops if I turn the lights on and off once. I don't think that is difinitive though.
