First gear funniness

The Shlomo(1979 240d- 152k, automatic) has been absolutely perfect lately, which has led me to post less but for the last week or so, the transmission will "clunk" when it shifts from first when it is cold.

It does not do it after the first 2-3 shifts, just seems like maybe the pressure is not building up as it should? There is no audible noise, but a "double" shift seems like it fits the condition well.

It *is* due for a fluid/filter change, as it has been about 15k since it was done, but it seems unlikely that a filter would cause it?

Thanks in advance and I hope to continue with the reliable sercive(and infrequent posting-- touch wood)

Same thing happened to me with 114/280 auto tranny, also hesitation at engaging first or reverse from stone cold. I developed the habbit of working through the gears a couple of times at start-up. It seemed to help.

There really is no hesitation in switching gears or engaging them, it just "skips" the first few times it changes gears. It is only in first-gear and only for the first two or three shifts.

Is this the beginning of the end, or is there a service part that could be repaired to help?

School, School, School and....

School

No, really-- The car has been absolutely perfect for a while now(touch wood) and I really have had no use in posting.

I shan't name names.... *but* theres this other place where dieselers congregate and pretty much only talk about how much they love them, love the way they look, the way they drive etc etc... They haven't helped troubleshoot anything in a pretty long time, so I've been figuring it out on my own-- Not that shocks and filters are very hard to do... ya know?

This is one I cannot repair on my own, though, as I have *NO* idea how an automatic transmission works mechanically(heh heh.. just to cover bases..)

I am afraid of taking it to a local mechanic, the once the tank screen plugged and it refused to start, they wanted me to have it towed 20 miles to them and did not even mention filters. I know they're in it to get paid, but it seems that as soon as someone complains of a car seeming like it had run out of fuel at 1/4 tank... that filters would be recommended without charge, ya know?

Maybe I am of the old-school set in thinking that to help someone is its own reward, and that money is secondary to happiness or helpfulness, but I digress...

Anyone? Does anyone know if MB parts departments are open on saturday morning/afternoon? I'd like to get the thing serviced A.S.A.P to see if maybe a clogged screen is lowering the operating pressure?
