any one know what trannys are the same for a 87 300sdl and if a latter model 5 spd auto will work I seem to remember reading about some one putting one in a earlier car.

Apparently the early mech OD units are not that great, I asked about it a while back... If you need lower cruise RPM, consider a 2.47:1 swap if you do lots of high speed driving.
Honestly, I do not see why any diesel trans will not bolt up if you swap the valve body and vac modulator. Heck, the gas ones may too from a 420/560 as they have even more torque than the diesels do...

I am looking for one to rebuild and still beable to drive the car then just swap in the fresh one .Even though I fixed all the leaks when we got the car it has another leak now. So I just want to do a whole tranny put a shift kit in and be done with it.
