Help! Used the wrong Mobil 1 Oil

Finally got around to change the oil in my cars this weekend. Drained the old oil, changed the filter, then to my horror discovered that the Mobil 1 synthetic Truck and SUV oil was 5W-30 for gasoline engines and not the heavier ones for diesel. Since old oil drained, I had no choice but to put the wrong oil in.

So the question is how soon should I replace this with the correct oil. I am in Houston (hot climate) and I drive 400 miles per week at highway speed (or faster).

5w30 is to light, drive it for a week and change to the proper weight.

I have noticed that they changed the T&SUV oil to 5W30 as well. I thought it still listed diesel engines on the label last time I looked, but no way I'm putting it in my MB.
Planning on 5W40 Rotella next change.

Rich,

What viscosity engine oil does your owners manual say to use?

Below is a quote from a Mercedes related oil Web site. The oil you have is specifically NOT recomended by Mercedes. I know what I would do. I would change it.

The best oil, the one highly recomended by Mercedes for Diesel cars, and teh one that neets the highest standars for your car, is Mobil 1 0W-40. Its a year-round oil

===============
some oils which are not recommended:
Mobil 1 SuperSyn 0W-30 SL/SJ/CF A1/B1/A5 9.7 doesn't meet 229.1 nor ACEA A2 or A3
Mobil 1 SuperSyn 5W-30 SL/SJ/CF A1/B1/A5 9.8 doesn't meet 229.1 nor ACEA A2 or A3
Mobil 1 SuperSyn 10W-30 SL/SJ/CF A1/B1/A5 10.1 doesn't meet 229.1 nor ACEA A2 or A3
These 3 oils do not meet MB spec of > 3.5 cP for high temperature high shear strength.

drain and save

Drain it now and save it to use in your gasser - it's not "contaminated" or anything.

Same thing happened to me, I didn't put it into my car yet . Got two gallons that I will give to my old man for his car. Didn't even look at the weight on the jug, just said 'Hey they got T&SUV!!!' and grabbed two gals.
Next time I'll read the label.

Looks like the GMC and Ferightliner dealerships are still the best source for Delvac 1.

I don't know what the normal oil change interval is for the E300 diesel, but I would go half that distance, and then change the oil to a proper viscosity. If you think about, there are MANY MB diesels out there that go to the dealer for oil changes and don't get the proper oil time and time again for years and they run fine. A couple of thousand miles shouldn't hurt your car.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I will change oil when I get a chance. I really don't know what the Mercedes specs, the owners manual is the same one for gasoline engine also, so the manual say to use Mercedes approved oils. They must list the approved oil some where.

I have been using, based on recommendations in this forum, Delvac 1 then Mobile 1 synthetic 20W50, then Mobile 1 Truck SUV 5W40 (I think) before the latest mistake. I would like to stick with the synthetic oils and will see what I can find around Houston

If you still can't find the M1 5W-40, you can use the M1 15W-50 instead, if it's in stock.

Mobil 1 0w40, 5w40, and 15w50 will all work just fine in a 606.

BTW any Mercedes dealer is also a Mobil dealer. They can get you Delvac 1 and usualy the price is about what you would pay online or from anyone else.
