Does this make any sense?

From a local CL posting... referring to an '85 300TD...

"Needs: injector pump for one of the cylinders (runs fine without it, but put it on the list.. approx $150 used)"

I'm referring to the symptom, not the cost... I know the injector pump is not an easy thing to replace. I talked with the guy & he told me that his mechanic 'traced the problem back to the injector pump.' He's says it only runs on 4 cylinders and has been this way (unbeknown to him) for the three years he has owned it... seems to run run and gets up to speed.

I'm wondering if there is a bad injector rather than injector pump... can a pump cause a single cylinder to misfire?

pdx,

An absolute YES to can an IP cause one cylinder (or more) to not fire. This is because one element in the IP does not pump fuel to the cylinder that is misfiring. The 5 cylinder engine will just run on 4 cylinders with a reduction in power.

A bad injector will not usually cause the engine to missfire. A bad injector will leak and inject the fuel too early and cause that cylinder to knock but that cylinder will fire. The knocking is actually the cylinder firing, only too early.

I know this to be true because: Been there, done that.

Alright... I'm probably going to avoid the car as the asking price is $3k and it isn't perfect beyond the pump... SLS leaks, slight body damage on right rear, other typical issues. Here's a link for others who may be more adventurous and want to tackle the injector pump:

Car has just over 200k... blue interior which I really like (dash cracks but otherwise descent shape). Paint looks good apart from body damage.

yeah but... it also could be a bad valve, did you listen for a leak?

or a hole in the piston. the explanation sounds a little goofy to me.
