diesel fuel temeratures?

so i wanna experiment with grease in my 240d. i would like to run vegetable oil in my tank and not bother with installing another tank.i live in so cal so weather is not a issue . i would like to put a heater in the line so the vegetable oil would be at a higher temperature before entering the injection pump.the thing is i will be running straight diesel sometimes. i heard somewhere that when regular diesel is heated it loses its lubricity and can damage your engine. is this true?

i dont think that is correct. Many newer diesels have heated filters to keep the diesel fuel from gelling. If it was a problem with lubircation then they wouldnt have put a heater on the filters.

And as for the inline heater i recommend a fattywagon electrotherm. Cost $55

I doubt that a factory fuel heater would run in the summer, and in any case would not heat the fuel to the temperature that you would want to heat grease.

Put a switch on it and turn it off when running diesel fuel, and you'll be fine.

hhhmmmm ... i do have a large filter i purchased on ebay that is heated by coolant. it dosent have a thermostat so it heats the fuel to whatever temperature the car is running at. would this work? the thing with this one is i cannot turn it off so it must be compatible with diesel fuel.

The fattywagon electrotherm starts warming up the second you flip the switch and in a matter of minutes its really hot! and gets the wvo really hot!

Add a valve. Then you can turn it off.

Diesel fuel does loose some of its viscosity when heated. Depending on how much you heat it, it also becomes more compressible.

NACA has some papers that discuss these things.

Viscosity of diesel engine fuel oil under pressure http://naca.larc.nasa.gov/reports/1929/naca-tn-315/
The last page has a temperature vs pressure graph on viscosity

Influence of fuel-oil temperature on the combustion in a prechamber compression-ignition engine http://naca.larc.nasa.gov/reports/1936/naca-tn-565/
This one touches on the compresibilty issue
