87 300 TDT timing chain and vacume pump
My 87 wagon just turned 150k. I am planning to replace the timing chain and vacume pump as a preventative measure. My question in terms of wear should the guide rails also be done or is that overkill. The car has been very well maintained( very frequent oil changes) any insight? THX

It's the tensioning rail that suffers the most wear.
But, 150K is not too many miles if the engine had frequent oil changes in the past. The tensioning rails can typically go over 300K. I did see one fail recently at 420K. I presume it was original. Why do you want to replace the chain? Is the elongation outside of the spec? Is the vacuum pump original? |

The vacume pump is original, in my mind a time bomb. The chain, well I have always heard 150k is a good number to consider replacement and have always done them at this point. The chain has a little streach 3 degrees maybe, car runs great. Do you have any suggestions? Thx

I don't see any good reason to replace the chain. A chain failure is usually caused by a failed guide or tensioning rail. As mentioned 150K is not that much mileage for the guides. Many members are well over 225K on the original chain and rails. The limit for replacement of the chain is 4°. |
