when do you think I can buy a BLUETEC Diesel in NY State?
So those in the know, when do you think I'll be able to buy one of the new MB Diesel vehicles here in NY State?
NY State has this 'stupid' [IMNSHO] law that negates sales or registration of new diesel passenger vehicles ... under the pretense of strick emissions laws I believe. [Ignoring the fact that the prevailing winds of the US blows much of the particulate pollution west of us, over and onto us.] With the expectation of the low-sulphur diesel that is supposed to hit the market, I suspect that may finally change for NY. I expect there will be a period where the 'old' diesel in the system 'contaminates' the new fuel, and the new vehicles may not take kindly to that. So in what year (and month?) do you think I'll be able to buy a new efficient and clean MB diesel, both based on when the new low-sulpher fuel will be widespread (and uncontaminated), and when it will be 'permissible' by emissions laws here in NY to sell the diesels? Thanx for your thoughts... Steve |
AFAIK 2007, talk to your local MB dealer.
I saw the drive line at the NY auto show, its pretty neat. The exhuast has a bunch of cats and what looks like O2 sensors! |
this is a standing offer to you 7 staters out there....
well if you want it slightly used buy it here in wisc. let me drive it a while and i can then sell you your car back for a buck at 7000 miles or what ever point it becomes a used car by your state standards..

LoL ... If I knew 'ya I might take you up on that offer... But I'm also looking @ future MB vehicles now anyway.
I really want a diesel wagon. Tried bidding on a 1987 300TD which I didn't get. Then decided after that loss I'd wait to buy the new fangled tech, in wagon form. ...preferably in 4-matic if it were to come out. That would cover all bases for me; could get rid of the Jeep for snow traction, would be a fuel efficient daily driver, and have penty of room in the cabin for 'stuff'. |
Don't know if they will offer AWD with the diesel, rumor is thye might.
AFAIK the only diesel we will be getting for now is the E320CDI sedan. Called the "bluetech" in 07. Btw you can buy new CDI's in CT, kind of surprised you can't in NY. |
hattie,
ny state awa the other 6 states adopted the cali carb rules so no "new" diesels until bluetech. |
there have been rumors that a diesel wagon WILL be re-introduced...don't know about the 4MATIC option...
The BLUETEC will be 50 state compliant and can't come on-line 'til ULSD arrives. |
The 320CDI's of the E, R, GL, and Sprinters should be 50state legal in 2007 when ULSD is at pumps nation wide.
|
According to an article in the May/June 2006 issue of the Star initial Bluetec models (2007) will NOT meet the emission standards of California and will be 45 state cars - same as the current CDI.
They are hoping additional emissions development work will enable California compliance by late 2008. |
friggle fraggle fruggle frukn muck...   well that just ruined my fun! Thanx for the info all the same though. Very good to know I shouldn't put my plans on 'perma-hold' waiting for a day that might not come for a long time ...maybe I should bid on a Jetta Wagon TDI then after all... :( Or maybe, once we get rid of this frig'n govenor and his pals who pushed through that "say no to diesel" campaign, political pressure for fuel economical vehicles can get a waiver passed or something.

What is this emissons stuff you all speak about.
I have lived in practically the only two states that have no emissions laws. Montana and Wyoming....... just thought I would rub it in..... If anyone needs a "permanent" address..... you know where to go.... However you may get shot going through NY traffic with a WY plate.:D
|
Even with the Bluetech equipment and ULSD, the V6 E320 CDI will not meet the emissions requirements of 5 states, making it a 45 state vehicle. That is why Mercedes is pushing its AdBlue technology to allow sales in all 50 states. Currently, AdBlue is under a controversial EPA high-focus magnifying lens.
