something funny happens when i turn steering to the right

the car is an 83 240d with manual transmission and 285k miles. when i turn the steering wheel to the right there is a vibration of sorts and what seems to be some sort of low frequency noise. do not know how else to describe the situation. if i am am stopped, turning the wheel does not result in anything strange. have to be moving. the 'situation' occurs even with slight steering to the right. left steering is fine. steering does not have any play. my jacking up the car and looking for play on the wheels does not reveal any. thoughts greatfully appreciated. thank you.

Bad front wheel bearing, classic symptom. I believe if you check your left front wheel bearing you will find the problem there.

Hell yes, replace the wheel bearings at 285k miles as routine maintenance if you want to keep the car. Inner and outer wheel bearing kits for the 240D are $29 per side. I just did mine at 225k while installing new rotors.

Or could it be Power Steering pump related? never seen one die, but I'd start by flushing the PS pump and replacing the filter to eliminate this possibility. Standard procedure for draining the pump is disconnect the return line and crank the engine without starting it. If nothing else, a maintenance chore that should be done each couple of years. The filter is in bottom of the bowl.

Otherwise wheel allignment should be able to diagnose ball joints and control arms if it feels suspension related.
