My 84 300TD has a small hole in the flex pipe, and I was wondering what that fexi stuff actually does. I have seen flexable exhaust on FWD cars but never on a RWD...

So the question is, could that be replaced with a pice of steel, with out inducing more stress on other parts of the exhaust system? creating rattles, and other bits of comotion??

I Mean EGR
If you are referring to a ribbed 1" diam tubing, usually stainless that comes off of the header manifold and to a thermostat shaped device (EGR) on the top front side of the engine this is your EGR feed tube, exhaust gasses enter this pipe and then get recycled into your intake, not a great thing you could remove it altogether and just cap off the manifold end, or you can replace it with any form of tubing. Does not have to be flexible since both attachment points are bolted to the engine itself.

The diesel engine vibrates and rocks much more than a gas engine; the flex section prevents the vibration from traveling down to the rest of the exhaust system. IMO you need the flex section to prevent excess strain on the rest of the exhaust system.

yep, i wouldnt recommend mounting up solid. i would think maybe unintended consequences might happen.

I'm about to cut up and recycle my SDLs wrong exhaust system (don't get me started), it still has the flex section if you need it. Just pay for the shipping.

Hit man X, I may take you up on your offer, Just let me make sure they are the same diamater/ basic shape and I will send you a PM. BTW, how did you get the wrong exhaust system for your SDL? Or is it a system you fabricated?

Oh my, long story.

Not my doing, car had the exhaust hacked off from the cat all the way back and something a muffler shop welded up installed. I think lying in sooty oil and chaning that exhaust was the MOST soiled I have ever been. I have the proof in pictures I took!

So I just tossed the ~18' dowpipe in the backyard until I bought a Sawz-All. Just got one last week so I can get that thing cut down and recycled here.

Shipping should be about $12 insured to you via USPS Flat Rate box (I love those!). I stuffed 22lbs into one once.

You could ship solid gold brick in it for the same flat rate. (Not recommended.)

I have half a mind to ship a box of clay to someone, boxes of nails, bricks, rocks, whatever just to mess around.

There was something online a while back regarding someone used one of those No Postage Necessary deals and shipped an old tire to the company!!!
