I was at the autocross and actually went around the track in Adam's car while he was driving. It was a blast!!! IT was Adam myself and oliver the driver of the 450 sel. Oliver and I were giggling like little girls. Adam truly drives that car on the edge when he is autocrossing. I compared his style of driving to some old Mercedes test driving films I have seen in the past where they were just throwing the car around like it was nothing, that is exactly how he runs the course.

Aren't....wear...levels....on said cars....increased by such driving?

Thats the one thing I'd be concerned about. I drive mine fairly hard but not like that usually....

You kept it in L? Doesn't that make you travel along at super high rpms? I mean its like 4700 at 40 mph in L....(2nd gear)

I am still tempted to show up for one of these events at some point....as soon as I get my hands on a 600SL... Kidding...I'd love to try out something like that in my land yaht though!

Do a google video search on autocross. They don't go very fast at all. (Lots of turns, not good if you have a manual tranny). It's mostly about driver skill.

Did it years ago in a VW GTI

FOlks,

"Do a google video search on autocross. They don't go very fast at all. (Lots of turns, not good if you have a manual tranny). It's mostly about driver skill."

There is a major SCCA group in NC that does autocrosses all over the state. Many are parking lots or around city blocks. My GTI was great here because it was narrow and had good 10-50mph acceleration. I beat a bunch of higher powered cars because they couldn't turn quickly enough. It was fun seeing a 1970 Old 442 with 3 times the motor and hp spinning out around pylons I zoomed through. One of the winners was a guy in a Fiat 124 spyder screaming through the pylons.

On the other hand, another course was at the old Kinston NC airport - with over a 1 mile straightaway. I never went, but my poor little GTI would top out in the 80's. The Z cars and others would have zoomed right by.

I drove that car on probably a dozen days, 3-4 races each from the time it was a year old. It never seemed to bother it other than the tires.

Chuck

did you check out the reaction of the guy in black?

Autocrossing is a blast, but is harder than it looks once you're really out there doing it. It doesn't look like drivers are going very fast, but once its your turn you feel like you're always just on the verge of losing it. Here's a few of my auto-x pics. Not an MB but what can you do? I thought about using my 300D just to get some good pics of crazy body lean and see what it would be like to turn that bus wheel around under pressure, but haven't given up a heat in my regular auto-x car to do it yet!

Here's my diesel!

We have an autocross every year in Cincinnati. I took my SDL last year. Had a blast. Pretty much threw it around way to hard on purpose. Wanted to feel where the limits where and how it behaved whe it went beyond. Wife said i pulled a wheel off the ground in one turn. I think I did get the award for best burn out by a diesel at the start. Arron was there I think.

I should look into one of those events in my area. The SDL really has some grip for a large heavy car, you kind of need to grab the W126 hard and force it around the corners. She will complain but do as she is told.
