is this a record?
the fan belt installed friday by goodyear failed 20 miles from home tonite. 2 hrs on the i waiting and getting towed. nice. the last belt had been in the car at least since last jan 2005 when we got red from old navy. isn't a fan belt supposed to last longer than 72 hrs or 200 miles whichever comes first?

Maybe they nicked the pulley or something.

Could have just been a bad belt too, who knows. Goodyear makes a quality product, I have their belt on my SDL.

Belt Failure
I had a serpentine belt fail on my '93 VW EVMV. I installed it and ran it enough to flush the cooling system and make sure there were no leaks, then took off for Charleston 100 miles away. About 60 miles into the trip, the alternator light came on and the sound of sand hitting the bottom of the van. On the VW the timing belt funs the water pump, so I turnned it off and drove th Charleston, stopped at the first parts place, bought TWO belts, borrowed a cresent and installed one. 10k miles later, no prob. I now carry an extra belt in all of my cars.
The firt belt was a contenental brand, was on a day and 60 miles. Drive rite made the two I bought, no problems. I did find reminants of the old belt wrapped around the oil filter it was shredded into wires and rubber chunks. |
It happens, have a Goodyear serp belt on the SDL. Its on year 3 and still showing no wear.
Goodyear, Dayco, Gates, Conti, whatever they all make good belts. You probably just got a bum one. |
well to see the results go to
crankshaft dampener and pully gone thread. |
I had this happen...make sre your alternator and your water pmp spins freely! mine the alternator bracet snapped and was causing the pully to lock of every now and then.

I don't like Gates on the M/B either. The Gates belts seem to be close in size to the metric equivalent.........and they sit a bit deeper in the groove.........thereby requiring more tension on the belt.
The Continentals fit perfectly and will probably last 100K miles........especially if you do not overtighten them. It's quite amazing how little tension is required for the accessories. I've got well over 5/8" of movement in the center of the alternator and p/s belts.........no issues with transmittal of torque. |

We use Gates at the boat yard on just about everything. From Yanmar, Cummins, Cat, Merc, ect ect. Neve had any problems or issues.
Yanmar's offical belts are made by Mitsubishi. |
