I heard that since they don't have any room to absorb impact, they are designed to bounce around in case of an accedent. Sort of like a gasoline powered bouncy ball.

I take it you havent seen the f150 vs smartcar into solid object video? Both vehicles rammed head on into a cement wall @ 85mph. f150== instant death, smart car==few broken bones...

That being said I dont beleive this vehicle is DOT compliant.

I agree that it looks like a certified death trap..but.........safety isn't in pure mass alone, but in the transfer of forces during a wreck in such a way as to slowly decelerate the human(s) inside (and not crush them! )

That being said, it might very well be a very safe car.

You can drive across the border and buy one from canada for about 20ish K Can.

Depending on your state, it might be very easy to import one. My father brought his canadian truck to Georgia and he went to the DMV with the truck and his Canadian registration(they dont have titles over there) and they checked all 3 VINS and sent him home with a georgia tag and his title came in the mail 2 weeks later. No customs to pay of anything.

I did NOT know they passed US DOT until...

I read that some time 2002 or so they were US approved. A seller in Canada, actually, linked to the DOT.GOV page and we read it with our own eyebones.

As for death trap - yes. Half my family lives Europe. Grandmother's favorite neighbor had a Smart and was in what would have been a fender bender. It ended in death. NOT worth the economy to me.

They're out of their minds bidding 21K + on a car that lists for $10K USD in other parts of the world.

For one thing, I can probably buy a nice E320 CDI with the same buy-it-now pricing as this indidual has set on his listing.

For another MASS is what wins in ANY collision. Where does one think the energy goes after hitting a 4K lb object that was traveling at 50 mph? In the tiny Smart car, it goes nowhere but to the driver. The car bounces into the sky and lands on its side at times(according to footage). The passenger absorbs the brunt of the impact.
A car of its proportions can only absorb so much energy before the safety cage begins to collapse. After that, there are "complications".

ZAP now sells the smarts and here in FL they have a dealer selling them for.. 30k USD ... all they do is put a MPH speedo and a catalytic converter.. thats it.. for 20k.. absurd! must be republican backed

didnt you see the 70mph head on collision the smart had with a jersey barrier.. the car survived the doors could still open the safety shell was not bent. although youd die from the sudden deceleration it shows the car is strong..

OK, now let's see the F150 head on into the smartcar @ 85mph.

It would still do better than my motorcycle in a head-on, and I'm not going to quite riding that anytime soon.

Given the impact into a cement wall I still think the smart might come out better. I cant find the video anymore but it was pretty impressive. I can only imaging the smart car bouncing off the car like a tennis ball.
