I will go take a look at my parts car tomorow (DUH!)
I thinkered with the motor even more and I dont like what I'm hearing. I have absolutely no experience with diesels or benz's but I think the noise is a vavletrain noise. I comes from either the 2nd or the3 rd cylinder. Maybe I'm just being paranoid but it seems like it keeps getting worse the more I listen to it. May parts car ran sooooo much smoother than this motor.

In your town, you might try this place for help
Hi,
I had a long discussion about a vintage 1941 Mercedes Luftwaffe staff car on ebay with Mathieu J. Cama, who has a vintage MB repair and restoration shop your town, Lawrenceville, GA. through this seite where he occasionaly contributes. (Scroll Vintage discussion, archives, for his thoughts on this car), and click his profile for direct contact information His website is www.oldworldauto.com and after exchanging a few emails, with him and perusing the site, read his biography! you might be able to get some help, right in your own town!! Obviously, I have never been there, but in your shoes, I would definately give him a shout!!! His signature line shows one of his personal cars is a 1984 300D - 5 speed, so he could most likely speak to your exact issue(s) on your car. Hope this is of some help. If you call/email him, feel free to use my name (in connection with my discussion of the old 1941 cabrio on ebay) as the reference. Hope this is of some help. Best wishes, Jim

two things
first change all filters, both fuel (2)and air. and if there are any black dots in the small fuel filter, you have fungus. then get fungicide and treat your fuel, available at truck tractor and marine suppliers. second, if it were valve noise it would be constant, not intermittant, i think. have you ruled out ac compresssor noise? tom w

ATM vent, I mean athmosphere vent line. Some of the vacuum lines are not connected to anything but going thru the firewall and vents to dry air inside or under the dash. if you can see on the EGR switchover valve, the nipple where it is connected to is marked ATM(I'm guessing athmosphere) or some German translation.

Thank you for the link JimB !
Thnak you for the info 85 shengden300D and walgamuth I will go see him and get him to diagnose the car for me before I dig deeper into it. I must say right now, I'm really leaning towards swapping everything from my strong running parts car to this one.

The only vacuum line I know that is purposely left open is...
the vent line that goes from the Vacuum Control Vvalve [VCV] on the IP and running through the firewall and vents [actually "sucks"] air from under the dash [where it would be less likely to ingest some debris. An old mechanic's trick is to put a cheap fuel filter on this line under the dash to further protect against such debris.
And another vacuum filter trick is to put a fuel filter on the line running from the engine shut-down valve [also located on the IP]... to put a clear fuel filter here so you can visually see when the diaphram ruptures and spills oil into the vacuum system and leaks from the vacuum switch under the dash on the ignition switch! But this means you gotta look at the filter case BEFORE the oil starts spilling out onto your shoes!!! So if you do this one, be sure to run extra vacuum line and position the filter in an easily seen location! Regards, Sam |
