chassis and engine range numbers
Just bought a 1981 300d. hw do i know what range my engine and chassis are for parts ordering??

You have a W123.130 chassis, with a 617.912 engine.
You will see these numbers when you peruse fastlane for parts (click on the "buy parts" link above) Most people refer to that chassis as a 123, and the engine as a 617. You will note that many part numbers on your car start with 123, although a few will be stamped with 116 or 114 or even 108. In these cases they were able to use parts from other chassis and save a buck on tooling. (plus, if it aint broke, don't fix it)

What you are looking for are the last 6 digits of the vin number and the last 6 digits of the engine number.

The engine model and serial number is located on the left rear of the engine block, below the cylinder head on a flat spot of the block. The VIN number is located on the driver side door latch pillar on a steel number tag, and on the driver side window pillar (betweent he "A" pillar and windshield) on a metal tag. You should have both the engine and VIN numbers handy as Mercedes has a tendency to make running changes, and everything is based on the serial number.
