240d question on oil/oil filters and fuel filters
I now am worried about oil, oil filters, fuel filters. Prior to reading all the other “Posts” , I would just go to my local auto parts store and just buy oil, filter etc, with out much thought as where or how good the item I am buying.
On my Isuzu, I used Shell 15w/40 for the last 3 or 4 hundred thousand miles. After the price rose to over 8 dollars a gallon, I started using Coastal 15w/40 . I did check to make sure the “C” and “D” ratings were the same as Shell. After reading several different ‘Posts’, I am going back to Shell for both the Isuzu and the 240d. Now oil filters …………… when Autozone and Advance Auto stopped stocking the oil filter for the Isuzu, I now buy from NAPA. But at 22.00 per filter, I am still looking for something cheaper. After buying the 240d, I went to Advance Auto and came out with Purlator oil filter and fuel filters (primary and secondary). Now, I am not sure if Purlator is a good brand. Bottom line, would like to know what brand of oil, oil filters, and fuel filters other 240d owners use |

I'm sure you'll get tons of confusing advice - much like the posts you've read.
Personally, I use Shell Rotella 15w40 in the summer, and Rotella Synthetic 10w50 in the winter, and Purulator filters. I'm not claiming its the 'best', but it works. However, THE MOST IMPORTANT THING, regardless of oil or filter brand, is that your change it HOT and change it OFTEN. You could use the best oil ever made, and neglect to change it, and do more damage to your engine than someone using store brand oil, but who changes it hot and regularly. Just something to think about. peace, sam

don't sweat the small stuff
I've done the same thing. Ultimately, just follow Mr. Bible's advice and change it hot and often. Buy oil rated for diesel engines like Delo, Rotella or Mobil Truck and SUV. Get a Mann filter from Phil or some other online service. If buying locally I've gone with Wix from Napa. It all boils down to Larry Bible's advice though. These engines are wonderfully robust, simple machines. More fun to just work on them and avoid worrying about these details (easier said than done though) I only pay about 12 dollars for the wix filter from Napa.
