Shakin 240D

I have an 81 240D that shakes the car real bad at low idle or any time in gear. Its much worse when its cold but even warm I have to go to neutral to stop the madness at lights. Here is whats been done so far:
-All new fule lines
-New motor mounts.
-Diesel Purge
-Dropped and and cleaned tank
-new fuel filters
-new oil
-new air filter
-new T-Strap mount
-did the valve adjust x2

The only thing I have left is injectors. I have 1 that nails when cold and they all look original. Motor has 130k on it. Could ratty injectors cause all this? Its a bit hard to start but not too bad and it does like to make black smoke at shift points and when cold. Ideas from the gurus???

Injectors sound like the place too go next. I would just replace the nozzels and see how she runs. 130K is nothing so I would'nt suspect low compression, hopfully its been well cared for. If the fuel was really bad you could still have some crud in there but I would do injectors next anyway.

There is only the normal little bubble inthe top of he prefilter. I have already redone the suction and return lines in the back. They were rotted out in the normal spot. One of the injectors did have an amlost wavy surface whre the pintle came through. It also has the heat shield encrusted in carbon all the way on both sides. Im just wondering if that one injector could cause the symptoms of really poor idle with massive shaking but still provide a smooth over 1200 rmp operation with plenty of power. Thanks for the ideas!! Keep em comin!

before buying injectors i would do a compression test.

i have changed a lot of them in my day chasing this or that, and never really found them to be the problem, that i can remember.

also can have them tested too as alternative. or the poor man's pop test, move the offending one around. it can be isolated by loostening (cracking) the hard lines one at a time to find the one that doesnt change the idle speed.

if you have an erratic miss, then this doesnt apply.

I was able to isolate the injector that was nailing. I moved it to a different cylinder and now the shake is different and the tone of the engine has changed. The shake isnt any less but the frequency of the shake has changed quite a bit. It also chakes a bit more when its warm now. I am pretty sure that the injector is not spraying correctly but its not a dead miss. Could a crappy injector or 2 create the shake or am I wasting my time by not getting a compression check?

no you are fine. if the miss follows the injector you have a bad injector. and if you have one you may have two.

after moving the injector you loostened the metal pipe again to be sure it is the one that isnt hitting right?

It nails less since I moved it and cleaned that heat shield but with that line craked I cant hear any nailing at all. However, it shakes even worse when I crack that line so its def working at least to some degree. So, could that bum injector cause my woes? Can it create the bone rattling shake that moves the car side to side when cold and only shakes the hood and my seat violently when warm?

I would have the injectors checked. Or just the bad one first if you want. Also you might just get a probable good used injector and pop it in. Then decide if any other needs exist before spending more money. In my opinion it could be shaking the stuffing out of you.

Well, I have a new Bosio nozzle and heat sheild on the way. When that gets here I will replace the nailing injector guts and see if it improves. If it does, than I guess I could be on the right track. If it doesnt, then im back to compression check time. I bought a diesel compression tester for 40 bucks off E-Pay so I will know either way I guess soon enough.
