84 300SD no signals or hazards

I just bought this car and love it. Just converted and recharged the AC for only $20!! The radio was stolen from this one and the wires were cut. I hope that has nothing to do with my turn signals and hazards from not working.

Anyone have this problem or have info on troubleshooting? Nothing happens when I put on the turn signals.

The good thing is my cruise control still works. The odometer is not working either.

Bob

My earlier models lost turn signals when the hazard warning switch was unplugged.

Is your hazard light switch completely plugged in and intact ?

Bob,

On my 300D, one day I inadvertently pushed the hazard light switch in an intermediate position, where the hazards were not flashing, but the switch was not in the full off position. My turn signals would not work when the switch was in this position. Next time you're in the car, check the position of the switch--might be an easy fix... This would have nothing to do with the failure of the odometer, though.

Good luck,
Chris

hazard switch

That could mean that a failed hazard switch could also disable the turn signals so for now I will focus on the hazard switch. That helps a lot. Thanks to the both of you!

Indeed, the turn signals are wired through the hazard switch. They both use the same "flasher" unit.

hazards

Well, I sorted out my turn signal problem. I had left my hazard button on (since they don't work I did not notice) so once I turned the hazards off my turn signals worked fine. So now the only thing I need to sort is that my hazards do not turn on when I depress the button. How do I get to the hazard switch to test it? It appears that the woodgrain cover may be glued on with an adhesive though I am not sure.

To remove the woodgrain:
Remove ashtray, and bracket (2 scres)
CAREFULLY slide back the woodgrain and lift up in the back once it is back 1.5 inches. There is a plastic "peg" that goes into a hole in the console. If you simply lift up the back you will break the peg. (like I did)

Man, I just did a few month ago...seems like you remove the ashtray and the flasher relay is just in front of the shifter and you can reach it with the ashtray out...I think!?? Peel off the black rubber trim around the shifter buys some more wiggle room.

However, if the hazzards are working the flasher relay should be good. I would look at the hazzard switch and it just pries (carefully) out of the panel. As stated earlier this switch can be kinda fickle and there is a "sweet spot" where the turn signal will work and just a hair more they don't work. All those switches are in perfect posistion to have coffee/cola/water spilled right into them (back to my no drink holder rant and rave)....so they can get gummed up and need a good cleaning.

If that doesn't work, you're looking at the steering wheel column switch, bummer.

You don't have to remove the woodgrain to remove the switch. Just CAREFULLY and gently use a small, flathead screwdriver to pry the switch out. A new switch shouldn't be over $30.

Hazards problem

Thanks for the instruction to remove that panel, it worked great.

I took my switch out tested it and opened it. Contacts look great and it seems to work just fine. Any ideas where my problem may lie? Signals work fine. Hazard button does not light up. Bulb is good. Switch is good.

same problem

same thing happens with my 84 300d. I was messing around with the hazzard switch tonight and then went driving and had no turn signals. That lead me here in fact. So it is a relief to realize that I just left my non functioning hazzard switch on.

In looking at the diagram for this, I notice that when the hazzard switch is off it just acts as a simple bridge from the battery to the turn signal relay, but when it is on it actually switches to a different fuse.

So I would think that if turn signals work but hazzards don't, then there are only a few places to look:

- the second fuse (which is hot at all times)
- the connections from the haz switch to the turn signal wiring
- the switch itself

I am going to pull my switch and clean it -- like you -- and hopefully that will be the end of it for me.

Actually, I just checked the diagram for your car (you can find it here :
http://mb.braingears.com/126_DISC1/program/ETM/81etm.pdf )
and it looks like when the switch is on, it passes through the radio of all things. You did say all your radio wires were cut, right? That could prove to be the main problem.
