Question

I was wondering how new MB diesels compare to the older ones. I have a 87 300D turbo and I was looking to upgrade to a newer diesel and I was wondering if it was worth it. Do new diesels get better milage and are they as reliable.

Mileage is better, all around they are a more modern and comfortable car. Mileage is of course up, so is power.

They are all about the same, have not worked on a W211 yet, but a MB is pretty much a MB. The W210 is extremly user friendly, more so then my old W126's in many regards.

I get 31.5 in overall driving (with no turbo), which is 90% highway. I suspect that you get more slow use than me. I've never run a tank exclusively on the highway, but 34 wouldn't surprise me.

You should break 30 on the highway without to much trouble. My friend reported about 35 actualy returning from FL recently. At 224k if your injectors are original, they should be checked.

The first step in your quest is to sell me your 87 300D. That frees your funds and inventory to get the newer car.

I'd imagine the newer diesels are quiter, but I can't confirm that.

Maintenance Question

Just out of curiosity, what caused it to go out (your reason for replacement) and if you don't mind, could you give us a ballpark figure of what the replacement cost was?

Also, how had the transmission been maintained? Did you ever change the fluid & filter or was it left alone because of the "Filled for Life" program called for in the Owner's Manual?

Thanks!

Diesel Mercedes taxi pride

W210 and newer diesels are in place all over Scandanavia and Germany, for at least four years now, and most of the W124s are long gone now from taxi service. (Only saw one in Oslo)

They have very colorful adverts all over the cabs in Copenhagen and actually look really neat!!

Those common rail diesels are great, economical quiet and real peppy!!
The technology has *really* come a long way.

And, the cabs are immaculate, the drivers wear white shirts and black ties, not like the slob drivers in rolling smelly trash cans they call taxicabs here in the United States

I thought a 87 was a newer one?

Go drive a '98-'99 - you'll fall in love. Quick as can be.

"W210 and newer diesels are in place all over Scandanavia and Germany,"

Last week I was in Abu Dhabi on business, noticed lots of MB CDI taxi cabs at the airport, all were 220 staton wagons, much less loaded than what MB of North America likes to sell here. It would be a dream to have one of these here or better yet a C class 200 or 220 with manual tranny.
