ULSD = less foam?
Today I topped off the tank, at a store that I seldom use. Have seen Fed Ex trucks etc. use this place. The fuel wasn't nearly as foamy as usual. Then I saw the ULSD label on the pump. Is ULSD less foamy, or was the diesel stale?
What method do you use prior to filling the tank to test for "freshness"? |
I don't know of any tests for "freshness", but what I do is frequent a truck stop that I know that gets lots of truck traffic, and goes through thousands and thousands of gallons of fuel in a short time, thus, the underground tanks are refilled at more frequent intervals than the places that sell diesel fuel at regular "corner" gas stations.

I fill up at a speedway that is in a busy location and has a lot of smaller trucks and pickups coming in for diesel, so it also has a pretty good turnover I bet, I've never had a fuel quality issue.

I just fill it slow and check out some crap under the hood while the motor is running... PS and ATF. Look for anything else odd.

The place the fleet (the company I work for) fills with diesel had a really bad problem with water contamination a few months back. I was draining 10-20 water seperators a day for a full week because of low power complaints.
It was a very busy station with lots of semis getting fuel all day and night. Just goes to show that anyone can be hit with bad fuel. Also, I rarely stop at the first "click". After the foam has set for a few seconds I can fit another 1 or so gallons into the tank. |
Happy Birthday Forced!!
I thought you were going on a trip? Danny |

I'm leaving for the Denver-Tulsa trip as soon as I finish typing this post. Across Kansas to Tulsa to get there and through western OK - southern CO on the way back. Roughly 1600 miles. |
i always use a brandy snifter. first i check for clarity, then aroma then i take a small amount and swish it around and under my tongue......
just kidding. i doubt that foam or lack of it makes much diff. tom w |
