190d - 1984 - The shift into 4th gear is HARD! Like BOOM! Thud!

Hello. Thanks for everyone being patient with all of my 190D questions.

1984 - automatic

Here is my problem. The shift into 4th gear is HARD! Like BOOM! Thud!

All the other gears....are nice…smooth…and zero flare. But when 3rd is over and it’s time for 4th…BAM…the front end comes up..the rear squats…

I don’t want to screw up the 1-2 and 2-3 shifts. But 4 is almost unbearable at times. I guess it’s better than flare, but is there a way to smooth it out? Is this simply a modulator adjustment? Any help is greatly appreciated.

The gears all downshift very well, sometimes undetectable. The Control pressure cable is perfect. When the car is floored it holds the gear until say 4300 rpms, and if at partial pedal…it will shift at a lower rpm.

Thanks again!

-Mike

Mike, stay out of fourth gear. Seriously though a lot of members on this site do not perhaps have much knowledge about your automatic. Just be patient and I think someone will mention suggestions about moderating it a little. It's probably a lot safer and cheaper from the standpoint of repairing it than excess slippage. Also one might ask a transmission shop that does a fair amount of mercedes transmissions for suggestions. Or contact them by email even. Or even a mecerdes service shop. Some places are always willing to give information out on reasonable requests. You just have to find them.

Still in need of help.

I think my tranny is a 722.xxx something.

Any help appreciated....

I adjusted the key "T" thing---no change whatsoever. I think it is a vacuum leak, but haven't ruled it out yet.

3-4 and 4-3 is a clunk.

I test drove a 1985 190D 2.2 which had more or less no vacuum left and it had very hard 1-2 shifts and made a big unnerving bang when it did. The symptoms sound similar to that.

based on feedback of others---I guess all of the gears are shifting hard.....BUT 4th gear is still a 'clunk'

I'm tempted to have the dealer take a peak.

I called a local indi/indy and all I understood was 'tony' and '125 dollars' about 5 min of conversation and I couldn't understand one word. So i'm either left with a local MB expert or the dealer.

is the transmission vacuum line simply one hard line? could I swap in a temporary line.... where is that picture of the tranny.

In all of my manuals I can't find which side the vacuum line goes into and where it goes into. I certainly see it leave the injection pump...
