some vacuum questions - '84 300SD CA car

I apparently have numerous leaks in the vacuum system, I can get out and walk around the car before the engine shuts off - though it shuts off fine if a hand pump is applied directly

I replaced the 3 dual dash pots for the vent controls and the vacuum line to the interior will now hold (hand pump on that line only)

wrt this diagram (presuming it to apply) http://home.comcast.net/~phantoms/vacuum/egr_california.jpg

the "vacuum converter" (#84) wheezes when vacuum is applied and the line drops to zero when connected
- am I correct in assuming its diaphragm is blown ?
(the engine shuts off just a bit sooner if this line is plugged, but still very slow)

the "switchover valve, boost pressure aneroid" (#126) has been bypassed with a piece of tubing connecting the injection pump and the intake manifold
-> should I reconnect it ? (the car runs fine as is)

- the diagram shows a tee at the injector pump with a white line running to the "vacuum transducer" (#123); no such line
- nor the "vacuum transducer" (#123) itself, nor the "switchover valve, vacuum transducer" (#125); no indication of where these even were ??

the vacuum line to the transmission is black and connected to the green "vacuum damper" (#72) off the top of the "vacuum control valve" (#65) on the injector pump
- there is only one of these green dampers in the system, not 2 as shown in the diagram (transmission shifts fine/correctly)

-> should I assume the vacuum system is plumbed correctly as is ? (a different diagram applies ?)

suggestions on finding the vacuum leak ?

also check the vacuum hoses attached to the backside of the ignition switch. Sounds like you are approaching the issue carefully and logically. Plug the vacuum to the EGR switches if you can.

The vacuum transducer is blue and is located next to the fender on the driver's side.

Oh, I'm sorry, I think the transducer might only exist on the '85's.

As for the line off the manifold, that line is supposed to go to the valve because that valve will prevent the engine from receiving too much boost from the turbo. It is actually a back-up safety device for the turbo's wastegate, which is not known to fail very often. There is a lot of info. about this if you do a search, but I think the general feeling is that unless the valve is broken, a little extra safety is not a bad thing and there are no significant performance advantages to bypassing it. If your engine gets too much boost it can actually blow up, I believe.
