78 300D linkage and idle adjust questions

Hi everyone;
I was tinkering on the new to me 300D yesterday trying to smooth out the rough idle a bit. It is a little smoother now then before after I lubed up the linkage points, but it still needs some work like fuel filter changes and valve adjustments - linkage adjustments too probably.

I have a sneaking suspicion that I'm missing some of my linkage pieces. Does anyone have a picture of what a complete one looks like on the 1978 300D? I'm also wondering what the compatibility of linkages off of later model cars are. I found an 80 D and and 82 SD at the junkyard today with what looked like similar linkages. Would these work?

Finally, my idle adjustment cable is completly shot. There is no longer an end for it to attach to the throttle linkage. I pulled the cable through into the passenger compartment but can't figure out how to get the cable off of the actual keylike knob. I don't want to break anything more by forcing the issue and didn't really turn up anything on the search, which is where I've been spending my evening. BTW, does the idle adjustment cable and the cruise control cable occupy the same space on the linkage? This is where that picture of a complete working linkage would be real handy if anyone has one -Please....

linkage ...

Ya' know, I think Diesel Giant, a regular contributor to this forum, has one of those cars and so do I. Unfortunately, there is stuff missing from the linkage rack on mine also but I'll take a pic anyway if you think it'd be helpful. Maybe DG's car is all in one piece, why don't you ask him? I'd be interested in that photo too ....

Thanks, Wiz, any photo would be helpful. I can post one of my linkage here in a little while for people to look at. I'll see if I can get DG to look this thread and see if he has any suggestions.

Have you ever had the oppurtunity to remove the idle adjust cable? I'm still stuck with the whole cable in the passenger compartment and it still attached to the key-looking knob that lets you adjust idle speed. I don't want to break anything by pulling too hard, but I'd really like to know how this thing attaches at the knob end and the manuals I have are sparse on details for that part(attachment at the linkage end is pretty straight forward). I'm sure it's one of those simple things that works great if you know exactly the mechanism works but will tear things up good if you don't.

ok, here's a close up of my linkage with several questions photoshopped in.

numbers 1,3 and 5 are my questions as to what goes where and some of the parts that I think I'm missing. Hopefully my assumptions in #2 and #4 are correct. Comments?

Here's another photo, sans photoshopping 'cause I suck at that program and my wife is getting annoyed with all my questions.

It's from another angle. I don't know if you can tell but the alda has a hose coming off of it with a bolt in the end of the hose. Any idea where this fuel hose from the alda should connect up to?

I have a 1979 non turbo diesel (300TD wagon). I have also had in the past a 1977 300D, the same engine and linkage. In answer to your questions:

1--I have nothing attached to this ball--just like yours in the picture.

2--Yes, this is where the idle adjustment cable goes.

3--I have nothing attached in this place--looks just like yours.

4--Yes, the cruise cable attaches here.

5--I have nothing bolted to this side of the linkage--looks just like yours.

To remove the idle adjustment cable, unscrew the chrome rosette that attaches it to the dash; pull on the turn knob and it will pop out of the housing. It simply presses into place, I believe. Then remove the cable from under the dash. Hope this is helpful.

Unfortunately I sold the car a while back.
