Center vents/Defrost question - '78 300D
Drove my car from Oklahoma to Ohio this week and ran great - no problems. One quick question: When the A/C is running, I have air blowing out all four vents, but I also have some blowing out the defrost vents (windshield 'freezes' over some). Is this normal?

Can anyone help me with this? In checking the online manuals, it seems that I am supposed to have a defrost 'leak' in heater mode, but none in cooling mode.

not sure if this is 100% the same on your car
On my 84 300sd there is a vacumm pod deep in the center dash that controls the flap for airflow between the center (face) vents and the dash defrost vents.
if the diaphram becomes torn it usually flops to the defrost position so, maybe you have a vacumm leak that is not pulling the flap all the way close? on my car, their is a row of switches on a common vaccum rail (center console on the passenger's left leg kick panel - behind that panel) that is controlled by the climate control. The climate control send signals to all the little switchovers that redirect vacumm as needed to all the vacuum pods in various places in the dash to open and close vents and direct airflow based on the setting of the climate control. Though it is a pay-for site - http://www.pindelski.com/Indexall.htm - does a tremendous job of testing these little switches (I found two of the 6 bad) and how to replace that crazy vacumm pod deep in the center dash. ps - that site is a wealth of knowledge for other stuff as well now, what I can't tell you is how different the systems are between mine (84 126 body) and yours. The one on the website above is a 126 body (I think an 82)
