Ac Adjustment

I just had to do this very thing due to a broken AC belt - go ahead and replace all the belts if you have to do the AC anyway...

As Carson I believe said - loosen the 3 17mm bolts and the 10mm adjuster almost all the way out then you can pivot the compressor - I actually had to use a wooden board to pry the compressor in enough to get the new belt on - it wasn't a slip-on proposition. Then reverse the adjuster to put tension on the belt and tighten the 3 17mm bolts.

Freeze12 is very easy to obtain, but R12 is alittle harder. You need to have an EPA certificate in order to purchase R12.
Plus R12 is about $30 a can compared to Freeze 12 which costs about $12 a can.
I personally would use Freeze12 because of the price, and if I wanted to use R12 all I have to do is recharge the system.

about the shop manuals....

If you make frequent use of the shop manuals, then you might consider downloading a copy for your self. The pdfs tend to load faster and you're not at the mercy of some remote server. I did this from mb.braingears.com -- just for my model. I used wget which is a unix/linux app. I don't know right away how you would do it from a windows machine but I am sure there is a utility availble for free somewhere that will download everything in some target directory. Most college/grad students, though, have unix accounts and so these individuals can use wget.

Exactly what I ended up doing also.... pried the compressor just a bit with a short 2x4. Actually used my floor jack to push up the wood so I could free up both my hands to force the belt in.

BrainGear???

The shop manuals in Braingear.com are partially ok. Since I am working on my AC I consulted for my 85 300D. The pictures do not match my car so it seems it might be a messed up manual.

I was looking at the section about refilling the ac system. It did show where the fittings are but the pictures are not of my vehicle.

I'll chime in here. R-134 does not cool as well in systems originally designed for R-12. It's better than nothing, but the newer refrigerants (Freeze-12, AutoFreeze) that are designed to replace R-12 are much better in your old system.

Just $.02 from someone with a R-134 300SD and an AutoFreeze Saab.

"screw 134A... im using Freeze12 when i do my ac rebuild... 33 degrees F minumum temp.. lets see R12 going that low.. i want it to snow in florida!"-TheDon

That just goes to show how little you know about Air Conditioning systems.
R-12 will go way lower than 33 degrees... your system has a block combination valve... this means that in addition to the TX valve it has the equivalent of a throttle suctioning valve... the purpose of that is to make sure the system does not go below 32 so that the moisture in the atmosphere does not freeze on the outside fins of the evaporator in your car... which will stop the flow of cool air completely.

Note also that Freeze12 is 80 percent 134a... so I guess you think that other 20 percent is some magic ingredient ...
But I hope all you short sighted people use Freeze 12 so as to keep the price of R-12 down...and pay the college tuition of all those professional AC guy's children when your system only lasts a couple of years from having to work at the higher pressures.
