Starts and then stalls

I have a 1989 Mercedes 190D,with the 2.5liter engine. The car starts right up in the morning, runs for 10 seconds and then stall. Then it takes 30 seconds to re-start the car with the acclerater pedal to the floor.Only does this after the car has been sitting for about 8 hours or longer, the rest of the day it starts right up.this condition is worse if it is cold out.Seems to me it is starved for fuel.I have tightened all the fuel lines to no avail.Help would be appreciated.

Sounds like glow plugs..........

If it only does it on cold start, I would suspect at least one, or more, glow plugs have failed. Many have reported that Autolite is not a recommended replacement. Try Bosch.

sergio,

If the car starts easily, there is nothing wrong with the GP. Its obviously a lack of fuel. There is enough fuel in the IP to start the engine, but not enough to run the engine very long.

You have a leak in the input fuel line some where. The fuel is flowing by gravity back to the tank as air leaks into the fuel line. Then it takes a while cranking the engine for the fuel pump to pull fuel fuel thru the line and refill the IP.

If U can pressurize the fuel tank, U should be able to find the leak. U can pressurize the tank thru the return line but U have to block the tank vent line and the return line from the secondary fuel filter. Be careful, only a slight pressure should be put in the tank <1 PSI. Eventually U should be able to find where the leak is by fuel dripping out.
