A/C not working 190D
Just acquired a 1984 190D 2.2 5 speed. Has been retrofitted to r-134. Was TOLD the a/c blew ice cold. Well, it doesn't and the compressor is not kicking in with settings on defrost or the snowflake. The central vacuum locks are not working either. From my search it seems this could be a vacuum problem but I'm not getting much farther than that. Things seem to be happening behind the dash when the various buttons for airflow control are pressed. Inside the glove compartment is an unlabled toggle switch marked off and on. Nothing seems to happen when I switch it with the car running. Not sure what the signifigance of the switch is.
On a side note, compared to my 240d manual, this car is a rocket ship. Such a smooth shifting transmission and great torque, it is quite easy to zip around in traffic. Kevin 1979 240D manual 262000 1984 190D manual 142000 |

Nice. A 190D 5 speed is the only car I want more than a 240D 4 speed!
Your AC issue could be a near total loss of freon. Often folks with a big leak cram it full of freon for perspective buyers, then it all leaks out. Pressure switch keeps the compressor from coming on when freon is low. Either check that out, or have it checked somewhere. You can jump the pressure switch to see if that kicks on the compressor, but on a 190 I'm not sure where that is. Someone will chime in, or you can use the search function. Congrats on the car. What color? Oh, and on the toggle switch, best to trace the wires from it and see where they go.

190d
It's tan (haven't looked up the actual mercedes name for the color yet). Thanks for the help. I'm probably going to take it to an indie for this problem. It's too bad more of these weren't sold here. I need the a/c because it's going to be my daily driver. The 240D is just too nice to drive daily or in the rain/snow.

i have messed with the a/c on the 190D (also a five speed) many times. The 190 is not particularly well suited for 134 due to capacity. Leaks can come from the o-rings at the expansion valve, the expansion valve itself and the compressor. I also had a bad hose once. Typically, on the compressor, it is the front seal. The compressor is rebuildable if it leaks (i did this twice). It is a nippondenso.
It needs to have a minimum pressure before it starts up. on this model, it is crucial that the AUX fan works, otherwise the system will fail. The vacuum system is necessary to control the fresh air and recirc air mixture, but it is not necessary for the operation of the a/c. I would take it for a dye test, from there you can begin the work. I still have the original evaporator and condenser as well as hoses that are now 12 years old. Hope this helps.

thanks jobah and another question
Thanks, I've left the old girl at a mechanics shop for a/c eval. I'm wondering about the valve train. Did your 'retired' 190D have noisy lifters? Seems to be a common complaint. Planning for synthetic with next oil change to see if it helps. Appreciate your reply.

back in the early 90's (I purchased the car in early 1989 with 60,000 miles), I chased a rough idle. I replaced the lifters -- but they were not the problem. I turned out to be a lousy mechanic and a stretched timing chain due to a bad tensioner. From the early 1990's I started to do all my own work on the car.
As for the lifters, it is a common complaint. I have found that if you run synthetic oil over a period of time like 25-30kmi, many of the issues disappear. I have used synthetic for the last 200kmi or so, and the lifters sound great. I would not touch the lifters, try synthetic but do not be surprised if it takes some time for the noise to go away. Also, you will notice increased oil consumption for a short time.
