Mr. Diesels 28K mile 300TD.
A buddy of mine has been looking for a replacement for his recently deceased 1983 240D. Yesterday we went all over the bay area looking at diesel MB's that he had lined up. We looked at a neat 1980 Peugeot 504 Wagon too!.
One of the cars he wanted to see was Mr. Diesel's 1985 300TDT. http://home.comcast.net/~mr.diesel.info/MrdieselTreepadSite/documents/3333CDC978239CB71F0DE1B7370B10DD04FA9F61.html While the estimated value is 10K higher than my friends ideal spending budget, seeing this car would certainly be an experience. I was excited to see the car, and excited to meet Mr. Diesel.... after watching immaculate diesel MB's come and go on his site for the past couple of years, my curiousty had grown.... what is he really like? where does he find these great cars? would he have any neat unusual diesel MB's tucked away somewhere in hiding? Firstly, the 28K mile 1985 300TD. The car is simply Amazing. Stunning. Gorgeous. There is no word that can really truly describe it to be honest. Driving a w123 with 28K on the clock is an undescribeable experience. As I was driving it I immediately thought W124 diesel! It idled smoothly, and as silently as a 617.952 could EVER idle. The transmission engaged with feather like touch and motion. And the car accelerated tautly, effortlessly, with plenty of precision. It seriously felt like a w124 diesel... nearly comparable to my friends 1987 300DT in smoothness, power delivery, and transmission shifts. the suspension is silent, and absorbs every bump in the road... making pavement imperfections, larger bumps, dips, and pot holes become distant light thuds in the background of a 617 motor that sings in a silent, comforting symphonic like manner. If anybody is looking for a CHERRY, solid 300TDT, then look no further! THIS IS IT. Mr. Diesel. A very VERY respectable gentleman. Kind, honest, friendly and quite personable. And as I had assumed, enthrawled with passion for MB Diesels. He knows his stuff all right! We chatted for a while about his cars, cars he has had in the past, pending projects of his, shared tips on restoration and maintenance, showed him my car (which he said was the cleanest nicest w123 he had seen yet! ) And I made it a point to tell him how I appreciate what he does- he helps raise the value of older MB diesels, which is esp. valuable when you own a 1984 300DT that you have invested tons of time and money to keep right while your insurance agency says its worth $2500. Overall, an AWESOME guy. A preservationist. His other cars. Tucked away was a very nice 300SD in English Red, which is listed on his site. Also was the 300CD, which was sitting on aftermarket Bundt replicas... they are much deeper than stock, and quite attractive in their own right. Neat. There was a 1987 300DT that was clean and straight- which he told me belongs to his wife when I asked him if it would be up for sale. I cant wait to see the next batch of diesels to roll through his site! And am glad I finally met Mr. Diesel. I made a new MB enthusiast friend!
