Thermostat fun

In driving around doing errands Thursday I noticed the temp climbing to around 110 at idle. Having just installed a new radiator and water pump last year I decided it was time to change the thermostat. Easy enough right, I forgot I live in BFE . Napa said they had one in stock and after getting it I tore into my cooling system. The thermostat that I pulled out looked nothing like the one I was replacing it with. Aside from the one in the car saying made in west Germany which leads me to believe its been in the car for a long while. The Napa one had no notch for direction and was a 176 as opposed to the 180 that is supposed to be on. I am wondering why the replacement one has no rubber bushing around the whole outer and the original does? Do I need to order this seperate? P.S. The thermostat is a nasty mother$%!@ to get to and remove on the wagon.

the gasket or rubber piece you describe is seperate.. i got a new one but you can probably use the old one if it hasnt fallen apart or if it doesnt leak, the tstat i changed out last month was a behr and the new one was a behr also 80 celcius model.. but for the love of mikey i cant get my temp guage to function correctly..

you should be fine with the 176. does it look exactly the same as the one you are taking out? if any major parts are missing you may have the wrong stat. the bypassing disc is essential on a benz stat.

also i usually test the old and new in a pan of water which is brougnt to boil while watching stats.
