240D auto tranny question
I have a 79 240d and last night when I shifted the auto trans into D, applied the gas, the car did not move. I looked down, and the shifter had moved into neutral. I pulled the shifter back down a little below the D and it engaged in Drive. This morning the car would not start in Park. (did not attempt to turn over.) I put it in neutral, and it cranked right up. It seems like my shifter is a little off. to put it in the gear you intend, it has to be pulled slightly lower than usual. Any ideas of what could cause this?
Should I not be driving it at this point? Thanks for your help. |

Sounds like you need shifter bushings. You might do a search on them, I can't remember how many and where they are. Seems like at least a couple under the car, and maybe one or two inside the car, under the shifter assy.
Others will probably chime in.......

JimmyL says it right. Is your shifter sloppy feeling? If it is then the bushing or bushings are bad on the shift linkage. The one on the shifter is easily changed by removing the plastic or wood that covers the center console. Remove the shift rod linkage from the trans and shifter. MARK the shift rod orientation so it goes back the same way. Remove the four bolts(I believe) and remove the shifter assembly. You can then replace the bushing at the opposite end of the shift knob. The lever on the trans is a bit harder to replace the bushing but it is do-able.
There is also replaceable bushings in the PIVOT for the shift lever. They will also cause the shifter to not select properly. This bushing does not go out nearly as often. BE VERY CAREFUL UNTIL YOU FIX THE LINKAGE ABOUT TRUSTING THE CAR IN PARK POSITION. It may NOT fully engage in PARK, slip out and ROLL.
