New to MB, help, gaskets intake manifold..

New to MB and the forum. Just bought an 87 300sdl with a pretty good leak at intake manifold. What I could use is an a to z list of what I need to replace the gaskets. I've heard 2 gaskets, 3 gaskets, 2 plus an o-ring. What tools will I need? I'm told I should change the plugs at the same time. Besides the reamer I've heard about here, are there any other tools? I need to do it over a weekend, as it's my daily driver. Oh, and so far I love it!

A few things can be done...

depending on how much you want to spend, such as replace your glow plugs, all your injection line clips, access the ALDA and remove the safety cap for adjusting as you need, possibly remove your injectors and have them tested/balanced. All of this is much easier to do with the intake manifold off.

Now since this is your daily driver this can be done in a weekend, with the exception of your injectors unless you have the tools to do it yourself, otherwise the rest is easy replacement stuff.

As to gaskets, you'll really only need the intake gasket one piece and the small rectangular crossover pipe gasket (get the metal one from the dealer, not paper). The O ring from the crossover to the turbo discharge is rarely damaged and can be re-used.

Regarding the fuel line clips, get a complete set from the dealer, you will likely have some broken ones already and whatever is not broken will break on disassembly, they are very brittle. These have to be disassebled to remove the intake manifold.

While the manifold is off make sure to clean the inside of it and the crossover pipe really well, do a search on how and what to use as captured in this forum. You will find a lot of gunk in there that should be removed while you have it all apart anyhow.

Good luck

Flag down your local Snap-On truck and buy this:

http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item.asp?P65=&tool=all&item_ID=1315&group_ID=154&store=snapon-store&dir=catalog

With that tool, you can have the manifold off in about 10 minutes.

What kind of leak do you have? Intake manifolds flow air and the engine doesn't mind small air leaks. In fact the engine will run without the intake manifold.

Oily goop will build in the intake manifold over time. This goop sometimes leaks at the juntion between the crossover pipe and the intake manifold, creating a puddle of dirty oil around where the #2 runner meets the head. You don't have to remove the intake manifold to replace the gasket.

Leaky injector return lines will puddle fuel around the injectors which are near where the intake runners meet the head.

Back to my point, what kind of intake manifold leak are you hoping to fix?

Thanks for the quick response...

Before I picked it up a MB shop in Naples looked it over. oil was, and is, dripping off the engine. He advised there was a large leak at the intake manifold and I should replace the gaskets, then steam clean to find where the oil is coming from. After 3 weeks of ownership I haven't had to add oil, yet.

with out the intake manifold, there will be no turbo pressure...

I would start by cleaning the engine, and looking for leaks from there.
as long as the car is running well, I would not dissasemble.

Correct, John. I was just making the point that an intake manifold leak is not as detrimental to these Diesels as it is with most gassers.

Roger, perhaps the shop in Naples can clarify their statement. If oil were leaking from the intake manifold, the leak itself would be secondary to the fact that oil is getting into the intake manifold in sufficient quantities to leak. How will a cleaner engine provide further insight to the source? I don't mean to sound argumentative, I just can't make the pieces fit.
