95 E300d on ebay--> $14K 118K miles?

Nice car, nice pictures, nice prose.

But $14K? Holy cow.

Maybe I could get $11K for my car!

It all has to do with a little something called supply and demand. Right now the demand is good and the supply is getting smaller and smaller every day.

That my friends is also a true "special edition" model.

Everyone who has a '95 E320 or E300 diesel calls their's a special edition, but they usually aren't.

This car is the right color, has the special edition only 6 hole wheels, and the burl wood interior (instead of zebrano). It should also have the stainless steel sill plates, but they are not pictured.

I like the leather but the wheels and burlwood don't do much for me.

I guess the condition, miles and special edition where worth it to the buyer.

This is good news for the 95 E300D market.

I thought I paid a generous premium for mine (mine was perfect upon purchase, so it was worth it to me), but that beats what I paid. Nice to know.

e300d

(mine=95e300d 168,000)

750 mile range is b.s. maybe 650 without a/c and easy foot.

I see lots of words about the e300d, but jack about this particular car. I paid $14k for mine with 110k in 2004. Supply and demand at play here.

Yeah, 750 mile range is optimistic...but afterall this is an EBAY advertisement...I think maybe 700 on a long trip on the highway...with the reserve light on for the last 50 miles. I've seen 35-37mpg with my 95 E300D on long trips. I get 32mpg consistently with a mix of DC beltway gridlock and highway driving. I don't have a lead foot so that probably helps.

I paid $19K (a bit much probably) for my car with 86K miles in 2002. It now has 169K. If I sold it I don't know what I would get to replace it.

Chuck

Hey Chuck, we're practically neighbors. Is your car holding up ok for you? If you sold it, I hope you'd let us know first. I drive around 70 miles per day in the DC area. Last week, I was selected by NewsChannel 4 here in DC as having one of the "Worst Commutes." They showed a map of my daily grind and everything. Couldn't imagine doing it in anything but a big heavy mb diesel.

WRC should interview me! I drive from Annapolis to Bethesda and back. About 40 miles each day. I used to drive a 2000 VW GTI with a 5 speed. Gas mileage wasn't great and it required hightest gas. A five speed gets old in gridlock traffic. Driving back and forth to work I see many wrecked cars on the side of the road. The GTI was a tin can and didn't feel to safe. So I found the 95 E300D. At the time it was the biggest car I could fine with good mileage.

My car is holding up well, though it has required maintance like any other car. Two sets of tires, plastic fuel line, front control arm bushings, rear suspension links, all new brake calipers/rotors/pads, motor mounts, shocks/struts, fan belt/tensioner, rear window regulator, two windshields (beltway rocks sound like bullets hitting the windshield). Two weeks ago the glow plug light stopped lighting at start up. Car starts OK but lets out a cloud of smoke. I think one or more glow plugs are toast. One Sunday the AC stopped working suddenly. I dropped off the car to the mechanic last night...I should know soon what happened to the AC and the cost to fix the glow plug issue.

I'm happy with the car...though I wish it had a bit more in the acceleration department. My goal is to get 200K miles out of the car before I sell it...though when I saw $14K on Ebay for E300D the gears started turning. Problem is, what is a replacement for a E300D? VW dealers want $23K for TDIs....forgetaboutit!

I'd say that sale is an example of a perfect storm. Demand for diesel cars is up, the car appears quite nice and is a real special edition, and the ebay ad is well crafted. I'm amazed that it went for that price, congrats to the seller.

In my '95 I consistently get 700 miles on a tank. Most ever was 762. But I put in 23.4 gallons that day! That means I had about a quart of fuel left! 90 liter tank holds 23.77 gallons....

I bet if I drove at a steady 60, took it easy on the go pedal, I could make 800 on a tank. (I find 900 hard to believe, but hey, maybe it was all down hill?)

BTW, as a data point, I paid $8K for mine 2 years ago with 140K. But cosmetically it's average at best. Mechanically it's fine. 211K today.

Rgds,
Chris W.

I drive 130 miles a day - I can do over 650 easily in the summer (100d heat, AC on, 80mph) and over 700 in the winter. That's why I love this car.

rocks

Rocks sure do sound like bullets when they hit this windshield. I duck every time it happens. I heard the e300d windshield glass has a special additive that attracts rocks. When you get enough hits, the additive leaks out and you're good to go. Thanks for the heads up Chuck.

Although I may be wrong, those don't look like mag wheels, but rather are just wheel covers. You can see the steel wheel behind it, and there aren't any visible any balancing wights on any of the wheels.

The car is also missing its tail pipe.
