Shredding Belts left and right

i have gone through countless numbers of belts with my 75 240D. i am constently buying new ones. When we put then on, they arent too tight or too loose. i have tried buying the higher quality belts too.

here is what we think to be the problem... the alternator seems to be pushed forward a little bit, which is causing the alternator belt to be on an angle, which could very well be causing the shredding. if that were the problem, how should we go about fixing it?

are there any other ideas as to what could be causing so many shredded belts? any info is greatly appriciated. thanks!

rachelle

Rachelle,

If the alternator is not lined up correctly, that is probably why U are wearing out belts.

I would check the mount or bracket that holds the alternator onto the engine. It could be bent or broken or maybe the wrong one. Get another one at a junkyard or maybe someone on here has a good one they will sell to U.

putting them on

I assume you are not "rolling on" the new belt (which will break the internal threads) but loosing the adjuster?

If you figure up the average rpms your engine turns...and multiply it by the ratio of the crank pulley compared to the alternator pulley... you will be amazed at the number of turns the alternator makes in an average trip... and you will not be surprised that your belts are wearing out if that pulley is not exactly lined up.
Sometimes previous owners lose or add to shims on items like that .. pretty much a measure then trial and error ... but well worth the trouble.
After you get it lined up then be sure to use the adjuster to loosen when installing... then find and measure the amount of deflection the tightened up belt is supposed to have....

First you should check that the crank pulley is OK and running true. Then, a straightedge held against and cantilevered out radially from the crank pulley will help you quantify and correct misalignment. Plus, you should check for basic stuff such as part of a hoseclamp sticking out into the belt path. All pretty easy to do.

If you are buying the same size belts and they are different apparent size when you install them, I would suspect your tensioning bracket is somehow broken.

also check the pulley all the way around of it is kinked or bent. this condition will most likely shread your belt till its gone.

Well, if the pulley isn't lined up correctly, that would do it. Also, my 300D was eating belts due to a burr on the alternator pulley that would shred the belt. like someone grabbed it with a vice grips or something.

I've had the same belts on my car since I got it....so they have at least 35-40k on them, they're showing some minor cracking, so I think I will replace them at some point this summer.

Here's a question, on fastlane for the 300SD's it says that they switched series on the belt sizes for the alt/waterpump belts. There's an "earlier" series and a later one. Earlier is 10 x 1037 and later is 10 x 1000, when was the cutoff? How do I know which belts my car needs? My car is from April 1982 if that helps. I would order some if I knew which ones to get. I suppose I could call phil, but if someone here could answer my question I could save pestering him about it. Anyone?

You might be able to read it on the belt or in the owner's manual.

Do you know your engine serial number?

Not right off my head (I should though, I'll try to memorize it ), I'll post it tomorrow sometime. The belts are faded, and I can't read anything on them...they were oem though, a faint star marking.

My 82 uses the old large size, and my new parts car uses the smaller size... my PARTS car uses the SMALLER size... did I mention it was my parts car? 3:00 in the morning trying to get my driver to work with the altinator slap against the block COMPLETLY unable to get the stupid thing to fit... I finally decided to compare the belt sizes. DUH!
on the plus side, I now have two NEW altinator belts.

Check the valley of the pulleys very carefully. I once went through a load of belts on a vehicle only to find a small chunk of old belt lodged in the valley. Dug it out and all was well with the universe once again.
