you can put " glow relay manual " in the Search Box and you will see the several kits they have to do what you want... although a bit pricey! But hey, they include a good set of instructions too if that means anything to you. You should have done away with that old series system as soon as you got the car! The normal amps for the new system is 50 to 60 amps and the fuse is 80 amps. I think the old one was only a 50 amp fuse which mean the glow plugs were drawing ~40A and much of that was used to heat up those large series wires on the outside of the engine. Very inefficient!!!

Ouch! Those are some steep prices. I'm pretty sure I'm getting the same thing with the parts I bought for about $25. I'm sure that time will tell though...

I can see that the pencil plugs are more efficient than the old loop ones with the resisitor wires. I've got 5 of them on the way. I guess moving to parallel rather than series accounts for more amps and thus the 80A fuse. Should be interesting, for me anyway. I like experimenting; that's why I bought the 300D, I won't be too heartbroken if things get screwed up on it.

I just had problems with my glow plugs. I went to diesel giant and read about trouble shooting. It was real easy, take your plug off of the relay and check what ones are bad. I had two bad glow plugs.Changed them out and the glow plug light comes on and the car starts better then ever. 5 min to trouble shoot and 1 hour to change the glow plugs.

I always wondered why MB used the energy wasting resistors between the series GP instead of higher voltage GP. I know they are there to drop the voltage and they were originally used without the resistors on 6 volt systems. But why, when the 12 volt systems were installed, didn't MB call Mr. Bosch and say: "We buy a million GP a year so we want ones that operate on 12 volts or we will buy from someone who will supply GP that operate in a 12 volt system without the resistors"?

That must be one of the world's great mysteries.

I'm sure Bosch would have complied as they did when MB decided to go to 12 volt parallel GP.

Wouldn't it be nice if we could get an insider at MB that could answer questions like these?

Manual Glow Plugs Rule

I have always done the manual glowplug thing on my diesels and especially on diesel conversions, on the OM617 engine seven seconds is the time i observed for a gp to reach peak temperture. The relay I use in the UK is a lucas (old mini type) but in the USA I find that a lawnmower solonoid is a good one to use and are only about 10 bux.

Good luck with this, when I suggested this last year there was some naysayers but i was not put off I have done this many times.

Yah, then we could talk to the guy that designed the W123 glove box door and latch

I installed my system when I was short of $ as a "temperary fix", that was several years ago. I really like it and will do the same thing to my "85" when the relay crapps out on that car. Its an anti theft device also

Actually, the anti theft bit was something I reasoned as well. Although no one would really want the 300D since it looks like an abandoned car anyway.
